Glass Moonroof?

First off, I was curious if this was an option on the M5 and if anyone has one? It is a quite popular upgrade in the e30 community, but very pricey!

Second, one of my friends who knows all sorts of little things about e30's mainly, but BMW's in general, mentioned to me one day that the moon roof out of a specific Saab we saw at the junk yard would fit the M5. Can anyone confirm? It might be a nice little upgrade if I can find one for a low dollar amount at a yard.

Cheers,

Brian

Errrr.
Why don't you measure your BMW's roof aperture & then measure the Saabs roof aperture.

Or have I over simplified ?

David
If the aperture is a fit I would have conisdered this a basic first step.
You dont need to worry about rails & motors.
You use the existing BMW parts & mount the panel on them.
There only used to be a couple aperture sizes for conventional powered sliding roofs from the o/e supplier to manufacturer.

I do know someone with a brand new glass sunroof for an E34. He could be persuaded to sell it but it is in the UK.

May have sounded sharp on my answers.
Not meant to be.
Just considering that when parts from differing vehicle ranges start getting chopped & changed,
a basic path of problem elimination is reqd.
Does it fit in the aperture springing immediately to mind.

Sorry
Farrell

It is not easy to see in the RealOEM diagram here how the sunroof panel comes out, but the Bentley Manual details it well.

Basically, you slide it back a bit, unclip something and then move it again and undo six bolts. The metal roof then lifts out.

I bought a Glass Moonroof from Dan when he scrapped his blown engined car.

The trick part, and something I've not had time to sort out, is that Dan supplied the extra frame and slider. The metal roof has the headliner (cloth or leather) attached to the panel and it slides with the roof.

The glass moonroof has a manually slid cloth headlined cover so you can slide the cover back and look up through the glass without opening the roof.

For the life of me I cannot work out where this goes in and the Bentley doesn't cover it, so I have been unable so far to fit mine. I'm loathe to "guess" as those motors will happily grind/damage/jam if I get it wrong!

The glass moonroof for the M5 was only offered for 6 months in America as an option, according to the bmwmregistry.com website.

I think this may be false information, as I know of two 3.8 cars with it in, plus have seen quite a few E34s in car parks and the like that have it.

(What I have not found is someone I know with one that I can take a look at and get some idea of how that slider works!

I hope this helps a little. Scour the scrapyards, sooner or later you will find a Glass Moonroof.

Regards

Ivan

Thanks for the help Ivan.

As far as "if the shoe fits wear it", I'm afraid it is a little more complicated then just the size of the glass. The mounting points need to be the same whether it is on the panel or the entire unit, and the cloth slider needs to work some how. I can see how one would think it might be that straight forward, but I'm afraid that is not the case on this one. Really I was just curious if anyone had heard this before and tried it. If not I may try for myself as the parts at a yard shouldn't be that expensive. I'll be sure to post if I do.

Cheers,

Brian
