It is not easy to see in the RealOEM diagram
here how the sunroof panel comes out, but the Bentley Manual details it well.
Basically, you slide it back a bit, unclip something and then move it again and undo six bolts. The metal roof then lifts out.
I bought a Glass Moonroof from Dan when he scrapped his blown engined car.
The trick part, and something I've not had time to sort out, is that Dan supplied the extra frame and slider. The metal roof has the headliner (cloth or leather) attached to the panel and it slides with the roof.
The glass moonroof has a manually slid cloth headlined cover so you can slide the cover back and look up through the glass without opening the roof.
For the life of me I cannot work out where this goes in and the Bentley doesn't cover it, so I have been unable so far to fit mine. I'm loathe to "guess" as those motors will happily grind/damage/jam if I get it wrong!
The glass moonroof for the M5 was only offered for 6 months in America as an option, according to the bmwmregistry.com website.
I think this may be false information, as I know of two 3.8 cars with it in, plus have seen quite a few E34s in car parks and the like that have it.
(What I have
not found is someone I know with one that I can take a look at and get some idea of how that slider works!
I hope this helps a little. Scour the scrapyards, sooner or later you will find a Glass Moonroof.
Regards
Ivan
