Engine shutting down while driving...

So I'm hoping someone can help me here. Twice in the last week while coming from 3rd gear to a stop in the right turn lane, (don't know if that has anything to do with it,) the engine has shut off and the steering gone dead. All electric stays on and both times I've turned the car back on and been on my way. My mechanic had a look today and all the belts are tight and the battery and alternator are providing good power.

Does anyone have any good ideas?

Possibly related, the power steering has gone numb and come right back, after 2 or 3 seconds, in corners. This hasn't happened in a while though, probably 3 or 4 months.

Thanks much for your thoughts!

Hi
Sounds fuel related.
There is a harness that supports power to the fuel pump & sls that exits out of the rear seat bulkhead.
Remove the seat & you will see where it exits.
Once it clears through the hole to the underneath of the car, you will notice that it gets very close to the rear suspension subframe.
The subframe can move a considerable amount.
This harness often chaffs & you get intermittant power to the fuel pump.
Engine cuts.
You pull over to the side of the ride.
Key on & off it goes again !
Very frustrating.
I would check visually for damage to wiring & solder a repair accordingly.

If its not this, then its likely to be bad earth or wiring of some kind.
You could also check the fuel pump relay but my money is on the first suggestion.

Cheers
Farrell

Just in case it is not the above problem, which is unlikely because vacuum lines on the brake booster seem to hold up well...

I once had the same problem and it turned out to be a split in the vacuum tube going from the intake to the brake booster. Though it happened to me on the freeway after everyone slammed on their brakes. The car drove home fine as long as I did not hit the brakes hard.

Another time I had that happened and it was the idler valve, but the car was idling horrifically besides shutting off -- it was sitting for two months. I am sure this is not your problem, but FYI once again.

I had a similar problem,

The wiring to the crank sensor had gone bad, refusing to send fuel to the engine, as it thought the crank wasn't moving...

good luck

I had a similar problem with my 500SEC Benz - it took months to find the piece of wiring harness that had a wire that was broken inside the insulation. I had another 500 at the time and I swapped a succession of parts trying to find the problem. Annoying, dangerous, inconvenient and even expensive. All tracked down to a small harness that I replaced for $10 in the end.

It sounds like Faz has put you on the right track though.

Does your car have Servotronic?

Strange that the power steering goes off when the engine is running and the belts are tight.

Did this only happen since the intermittent engine fall-out?

The wiring harness is a classic failure rightly pointed out. Needs checking anyways.

Fuel filter might be worth looking at too.

My experiences with this sort of problem have been due to vacuum leaks, ICV, or adjusting ECU. The vacuum leaks and ICV I'm sure you are familiar with already. The adjusting ECU as I call it, was due to a bad battery connecting. It's a long story, but when ever I would reconnect the battery and drive the car before the ECU had a full hold on things, I would some times stumble at idle and even stall. Other then that I don't know. I have heard interesting stories with fuel pumps going bad and being very hard to troubleshoot. That's probably not the case, but until you figure it out it really could be anything.

I used to have that propblem before my rebuild - it was due to the bypasses in the inlet being clogged up.
