Gearbox or Transmission Oil

Currently I have Redline MTL in my transmission, but it is loud and rattles.

Can I use thicker oil? I live in southern California and I have not seen it really does not get below 50 degrees F here -- so I am not worried about hard shifts in the morning.

I have heard that I should use a non-detergent oil in the transmission like SAE 80 Castrol EP -- has anyone tried this oil?

The transmission has about 110000 miles on it.
Thanks!

Hi Cory,

For your transmission you should use ONLY DEXRON II ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and for your rear differential use only standard GL-5 hypoid type gear oil, SAE 90

The gearbox itself would run on the ATF .

The Final drive i.e. rear axle / diff on the hypoid gear oil .

The M5 Owners Handbook that comes with the vehicle clearly shows all filling capacities .

1.25 litres / 2.2 pints for the gearbox .

1.9 litres / 3.3 pints for the rear axle .

I hear Redline D4 has been used with good results (in all climates). I use Redline MTL myself, but it can be a little thick on cold mornings.
