two different radiators from the dealer which one to choose

My radiator seems to be finished, still waiting to hear back from the dealer:
Feedback on replacing broken radiator hose?

so I called the dealer and got quoted two part numbers for two different radiators both for a 91 M5

Heres the first one
17111468085
$480 Canadian
found it online here for $230:
http://shop.carbodyparts.net/search....type=radiators

Heres the second one
17112226336
$1450 canadian (OUTRAGOUS)
found it online at Bavauto.com for $450 or so

So which one do I go with... iam definately not buying the 1450 dollar one from the dealr I might as well get it from Bavauto... but then I could just get the first one from the dealer for 480. or get it for 230 online... not sure which is the best choice from the two?????

any ideas.

Which no has the BMW dealer offered based on the VIN number ?
That will be the correct number.
Alternatively, have your own radiator re-cored.

Cheers

those two numbers were both given to me by the dealer when i gave them the vin... the parts guy himself didnt know which one i needed but said he will findout and get back to me... i dont know about recoaring the current rad and how much it will cost. i cant imagine it would be anyting cheaper than 300 canadian dollars to remove and core and install again... might as well buy the 400 dollar rad and spend the 2 hours labour at the dealers and end up with a new one

Hi
Parts are cheaper out there.
I figured that a re-cored rad using your existing flushed end tanks would be also.
It is a much cheaper route in the UK at half the price...
Down side is waiting 5 days for part to be rebuilt & pressure tested.

Cheers

Part 17112226336 (RADIATOR) was found on the following vehicles:

E34 M5 3.6 SEDAN, U.S.
E34 M5 TOURING, Euro
E34 M5 3.6 SEDAN, Euro
E34 M5 3.8 SEDAN, Euro

Part 17111468085 (RADIATOR) was found on the following vehicles:

E34 M5 3.6 SEDAN, U.S.

Very odd isn't it?

Looking at the other 21 parts on the realoem diagram, here, every single bracket, bolt and tube matches between the 8085 and 6336 version.

I wonder if BMW simply had two people making them and assigned a part number per supplier?

I also called up the page with hoses on for the 1990 UK M5 and the US version, (easy to do with two monitors on a PC!), and all the hose part numbers match up too.

I can't see what the difference is, nothing seems to point to any incompatabilities or a reason why they would not be interchangeable.

Regards,

Ivan

They're the same!

RealOEM for a 3.6 US car:

01 RADIATOR 1 17111468085 $457.56
01 RADIATOR 1 17112226336 $457.56

RealOEM for a 3.6 UK car

01 RADIATOR A=650MM 1 17112226336 $457.56

FOR VEHICLES WITH AIR CONDITIONING (S530A=YES)
01 RADIATOR A=650MM 1 17112226336 $457.56

FOR VEHICLES WITH NATIONAL VERSION AUSTRALIA OR TROPICAL VERSION (L810A=YES)(S823A=YES)
01 RADIATOR A=650MM 1 17112226336 $457.56

See, same radiator for both versions. Same goes for 3.8

01 RADIATOR A=650MM 1 17112226336 $457.56

FOR VEHICLES WITH AIR CONDITIONING (S530A=YES)
01 RADIATOR A=650MM 1 17112226336 $457.56

FOR VEHICLES WITH NATIONAL VERSION AUSTRALIA OR TROPICAL VERSION (L810A=YES)(S823A=YES)
01 RADIATOR A=650MM 1 17112226336 $457.56

Dr Sakke, it would be handy for reference if when you next visit your dealer, you get those two part numbers.

Maybe that can shed some light on the mystery, as RealOEM says one radiator, the same 6336 part number for all 3.8 cars. (I checked 07/1991 01/1994 and 07/95 builds)

Maybe, maybe, maybe, early American cars used a bigger radiator as they only did 55mph and needed more cooling in their sunshine states as there was not much wind coming in through the grill at that speed?

Regards

Ivan

Major 2-year-dead thread revival!!

Has anyone been able to work out what the difference is between the 17 11 1 468 085 and 17 11 2 226 336 radiators?
My search shows the same as Ivan's in that 085 or 336 is specified for US cars whereas Euro cars specify only 336 as do all 3.8s and that all mounting hardware etc is identical...

there is a very significant cost difference between the two...

Follow up.

I've done some more research and I think i might have figured it out. After looking at Behr aftermarket and Nissens aftermarket they list a radiator of dimension 610mm x 438mm x 40mm for the M5.

Also speaking to Patrick at BMAparts he says that Behr US only supply the 085 radiator and the 336 has been superseded in the States. 336 only being available genuine from BMW Germany. He also spoke to Nissens and they told him that they only produce a 610mm radiator as a replacement for both part numbers

A brief scan of RealOEM will show that the width of the 336 is explicitly stated as 650mm whereas the 085 has no dimensions. This might be the difference! Since all the mounting hardware etc is identical it would be fair to assume that the 336 radiator has a slightly bigger core but smaller header tanks making the overall dimensions identical.

I think this might account for the massive price difference. If Behr is mass producing the 085 radiators they will be cheaper, whereas the less common and larger 336 may still be original stock??? (guessing)

Behr's aftermarket parts catalog: Online Catalogue | Behr Hella Service GmbH
lists a 610mm radiator only (but interestingly says the OE equivelant is the 336 part) which I think reinforces why the 650mm 336 radiator is so much more expensive!

I have a 336 sitting at home (needing replacement) but i'll measure it later today and update.

hope this helps someone!

EDIT: I measured my 336 radiator and it has a 610mm core. Therefore I take back all of my hypothesising and continue to have no idea what the difference is!
