Seized water pump

I had my first experience of BMW Emergency Service when my water pump seized, fortunately as I was just parking up at work (although the clouds of smoke swirling out from the grille were still pretty frightening)

The technician arrived in about an hour, diagnosed the fault in about 2 minutes and removed the old pump. He didn't have a direct replacement in the back of his 530d Touring and asked if I would like the car recovered or if he should come back with the part and save me the labour costs of fitting (which are included in the Emergency Service subscription if the Tech does it but not if the car goes to a dealer).

Obviously I chose the latter, he returned, fitted the new pump, allowed me to test drive the car with him alongside me (even though this was the first M5 Touring he had ever seen he didn't push to get a drive which was nice, I almost volunteered him the keys).

All for £115. Can't complain at that !

You lucky guy,

I wanted to join that service, but my car is just over 10 years old, 1990 Feb Build, August registration, therefore I can`t have it.

A BMW guy is so much better than RAC / AA.

However, I must have some emergency support, so I joined the AA with their recovery service to my choice of location, as you can`t leave an M5 overnight in the middle of God knows where.

£80 for the year and two free cinema tickets !!

Hi Ian,

The BMW emergency repair scheme sounds good, how much does it cost and what is the age limit of the car???

Regards

Mike

Cost is £99 p.a. and I think the age limit is 10 years but I couldn't be 100% sure. If you go to www.bmw.co.uk and look under the Driver Services menu you will find Emergency Service and the full list of what is available under the scheme.

First time I've ever had to use it but it paid for itself in the saved labour costs.

Regards

I think the limit is based upon the mileage, I know it is not to exceed 100k when membership is taken up, but age related limit, I'm not sure.

Andy

Not sure about this one, I was asked my build date, confirmed via the chassis number, but never the mileage so, unless they made a mistake by forgetting to ask, mileage can't be part of the equation.
