Reliability

so, how does the e34's inline 6 stack up against, say the S62? i have a very close friend with a 2001 e39 M5 and also my MOM owns one. they both get costly repairs faily oftern, sensors, gaskets, plugs, etc. im used to my daily driver, a jeep inline 6 runnin strong at 240k of HARD miles (it still sees the rev limiter weekly)

anyone Daily drive there E34 M5's? i am looking at a couple low milage (one 65k, on 72k) E34's now, and am trying to guage how often, on average these things are breakin! both have service records since new, one has a Dinan chip, cam gears, full exaust, etc. other is mostly stock save for cat back exaust.

What kind of repair costs have you guys (and gals) personally seen?

Thanks in advance.

Marc

See this thread , whilst bearing in mind that most owners are proactive with regards to maintenance and tend not to wait for their car to breakdown before replacing parts .......

Some statistics; Maintenance cost

My 88 3.6 is a daily driver. It's never broken down in the 21 months and 45000 km I've had it.

But as davidoli said maintainence is generally a preventative thing.

Recently had clutch and flex disc changed, although neither gave indication of impending failure. Clutch was done as the gearbox was off for an oil leak and inspection revealed a few chunks missing from the guibo, so was changed.

This is normally the way it goes. you plan to do one thing and while the job is being done something crops up that may as well be done at the same time.

They are not cheap to run, but very reliable if looked after.

My 1993 3.8 with 145K miles has been my daily driver for over 2 years now - lots of stop/start and cold starting as well.

Solid as a rock, except when the battery went flat.

In the last 7 yrs & 160,000 kms the car has left me stranded 3 times.
1. A failed alternator / water pump belt.
2. The rear mains harness to the fuel pump got chaffed by the movement of the rear suspension subframe carrier.
3. rear ride height sls accumilator failed tipping several litres of pentosin over the differential & road.

Total costs for running & parts = £24k ballpark figures though much of that was when used as a daily car & also includes some as yet unused parts for engine overhaul.

It was a daily driver until 2005 but is now a second car.
preventative maintenance is the key.

Farrell

My 3.8 is a daily driver. It has never let me down but I haven't let it down either. That means oil every 3000 miles and the Inspection I and IIs more to a date than mileage. As Davidoli says prevention is the key.

My previous 3.8 M5 left me stranded 3 times - all down to battery problems (once due to a original BMW battery that was fitted from new, and twice when the alternator/voltage regulator over-charged the battery and melted it - twice on the same trip home).

Everything else has been maintenance - 4 oil changes a year at about 3,000 miles; brake pads every 10,000 miles; disks every 30,000 miles, brake fluid once a year; tyres quite regularly ; inspections I & II as the lights tell me at one of three indies depending on what I need done (only two do valve clearance and one does throttle balancing).

Anything else - including the engine failure as it was still producing plenty of power, just misfiring - has let me make it to the garage.

My current 3.6 had a battery drain problem caused by a short in the driver's seat motor which was resolved after having the interior out to do the leather.

I've had 2 M5's in total ;

Daily Driver 1992 3.8 with 164k from March 2000 to March 2002

1 EDC damper at front. Probably failed as I'd bought a new house and had to drive on the sand as the builders completed the other houses.....approx £700 fitted.

Radiator........not too costly

Gearbox leak - simple fix with a new gasket.....

1995 6 Speed 96k now from March 2002 to present

Daily Driver until July 2004

2 front springs (1 broke and caused MOT failure, so both replaced) less than £200 all in if I remember right.

Air conditioning condenser replaced £600

Rear axle subframe bushes - fairly cheap to buy - a pig to replace.....

Think that's it, other than usual service items. Look after them and they'll look after you.

Mark

Remembering the basics i.e. allowing oil temp to rise above 120 ' F before revving beyond 3,000rpm , regular oil changes ( 3/5,000 miles ) , valve clearances within tolerances etc will help to see these engines into the 200,000 mile range before rebuilds need to even be considered .

I personally have owned 2 3.8's with 177,000 miles on their original bores / engines without a massive drop in performance .

My current 3.6 shows 167,000 miles although the whole engine was rebuilt , including new block 66,000 miles ago , and that absolutely flies without using much oil !

Some sources suggest that the 3.6 engine is a touch more reliable than the 3.8 .........
