E34 M5 - where to find a good one in UK?

I recently took a test drive in a nice 95 3.8 with the Nurburgring suspension and floating caliper brakes. I was very impressed, and there's a good chance I will go for one. The one I drove was a 1995 LHD with 76k miles at Munich Legends, so should be in A1 condition, but it's going for £12,500 which is IMO too expensive for a LHD car.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good way to get hold of a good-quality late-model 3.8 M5 in the UK? Doesn't have to be absolutely mint, but the mechanicals and interior must all be in excellent condition. I'd prefer to buy from a dealer or reputable specialist. I don't mind LHD but would expect a decent discount. Can someone advise me where to look (apart from the obvious i.e. Top Marques!)

Matt,

Obtaining a late M5 ie. with the last revisions is a waiting game I'm afraid as the good ones are now staying in private collections. I spent the best part of six months looking for one and eventually a member of this forum contacted me with a 1995 ltd edition version. My advice is just to keep scanning all the online classifieds and join the BMW owners club.

Best of luck,

I am afraid you will have to think long and hard about this.

The following info is taken from and thanks go to www.e34bmwm5.com

Here`s where it hurts.

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.6

1988 331, 1989 2339, 1990 3022, 1991 2033, 1992 224, 1993 130

Total 8079 - No good to you, you want a 3.8

Production numbers of E34 ///M5 3.8

1991 120, 1992 1553, 1993 643, 1994 483, 1995 215

Total 3014

So, 3014 3.8 cars built worldwide.

Add the 891 3.8 Tourings, gives a total number of E34 ///M5's at 12249. (There were 265 CKD assembled outside Germany)

YOUR DREAM CAR

According to BMW, from 1989 untill 1995, only 696 cars were sold officially to the UK. This means all of them, 3.6 & 3.8.

That`s just 110 per year.

Now, 696 as a percentage of 12249 means that an average of only 5.68% of cars built came to the UK.

Assuming the percentage imported of total build was the same year on year, and you want a late model, we need to take the 1994 483 count and the 1995 215 count = 698 cars built.
Of which probably 5.68% came to UK = 40 cars to choose from.

So, 40 cars.

From these 40 cars, you have to add on any grey imports, then (tearfully) subtract the estimated number of accident writeoffs or scrapped cars.

Then you have to wait until one comes up for sale.

Oh, and what colour did you want??? LOL

Now this is doom and gloom, but every cloud has a silver lining. and yours has more than one.

1.
Munich Legends are probably the people I would have gone to if I wanted the best and have the dosh. Them or that famous Norfolk dealer in BiTurbo Alpinas.
I would have another look at that 3.8 in Munich Legends, even though it`s LHD, or make sure they have your phone number and understand that you are a very serious buyer when they get a RHD.

2.
I only have a humble 1990 3.6 with a few extras.
It`s the most amusing, brutal, awe-inspiring thing I have ever had. I can`t believe I actually have it. Just writing this makes me smile. You get to appreciate just what a bunch of muppets are in "The Fast & The Furious".

3.
You have the cash to get a late 3.8 Nurburgring model.
Its faster, more refined and handles better. Its going to be half the age of my car.

4.
Wait. Wait some more. Get the best one you find, and walk away from anything that doesn`t feel right. When you finally get one it will be worth every minute you didn`t have it.

Ivan.

PS. Drive careful. Change your oil. Don`t race big brown things with leaves.

Thanks for the reply Ivan - I hadn't really thought it through like that! I do not mind LHD, but was just concerned not to overpay. Given the difficulty of finding a RHD 3.8 for sale, let alone one in top condition with reasonable mileage, and then hoping it is cheap as well, maybe I should just go for the one available now - it may be LHD but it is in excellent condition, is the exact spec I want, and is even in a nice colour. ML do have a RHD 3.8 for sale but it's 4 grand more and I don't value RHD that highly (I've driven LHD before). It's also violet and that along with white and yellow is one of the few colours I would never contemplate for an M5!

I'm popping back next week so will go for another drive in it, I'll let you know what happens.

Saw the following at www.bmw.co.uk:

1995 N 54,850 miles Orinoco Green/Mint Petro Green Leather. 19,995 pounds. John Clark (Tayside) Ltd 01382 815993

Must be one of the last 50 sold of the special edition.

I had a 1994 3.8 and it was a great car.

Will let you know if I see any more.

£15k seems about right at the moment for a decent 60,000+ mile 3.8 M5.

I bought mine privately 14 months ago with the following spec . . .
October 1994 E34 M5 with Nurburging suspension, 343mm brakes with floating calipers, 6 speed gearbox, 86,000 miles and with a new engine and gearbox at 60,000. That cost me £15,500 and I thought it was a bargain at the time as everywhere else was asking £19-30k (the £30k one was a Limited Edition with less than 4000 miles on the clock).

I guess mine is still worth something like £14k now with 105,000 miles on it?
