EDC rebuild update

A few people have been asking me what's going on with this so I thought I'd update everyone

I was sick to death of this on-going EDC drama so a couple of months ago I started to seriously research a solution. After much searching I found a specialist suspension company who had the ability, but more to the point had the will to help us. These guys have many many years of experience with all manner of road and race suspension, they specialise in rebuilding old Ferrari and Lamborghini shocks amongst other things, and the boss is a good guy which is so important in these situations

Bottom line is that he's willing to help us. He currently has 2 front and 2 rear units in pieces and he's sourcing all of the necessary seals and gas sacs. They have the ability to manufacture their own seals if necessary so he's not anticipating any problems. There's nothing complex in the units and he's quite confident he can turn these around for us. Rebuild units would come totally refurbed, repainted and would be tested on their suspension dyno before being released. This is not just a hydraulics company, this is a bona fide suspension specialist who has all of these facilities in house, blast cabinets, dyno etc etc

The plan is the same as it always was, he'll hold a set of refurbed units in stock, people will buy them from him and pay a deposit which they will get back when they return their own units which will be refurbed for the next person

Target price is £100 per rear leg and £150 per front leg inc. VAT

I should be able to update you again next week. We will need to get him all of the blown units we have as there will be occasions where a solenoid or hardened shaft is too damaged to re-use so he has to salvage parts from another leg. Having said that, they can source the solenoids direct and manufacture their own rods if necessary but it would put the price up dramatically so while there are so many blown units available they might as well be recycled

More info soon :)

Sorry for the lack of updates guys but I've been busy as hell. There was an issue with one of the fronts, another unit has been built with a re-designed top mount which should have been re-fitted by now so the testing on that unit has to start again, but the mileage Sal does means it won't take long. Meanwhile the rears continue without problems. I'm working on my car all next week, the back axle will be completely out and I'll take the opportunity to closely inspect the rears but there are superficially no oil leaks and they continue to perform as they have from day 1. I have regular conversations with the boss of the company, he's comfortable with how things are evolving... we ARE getting there but this is the inevitable testing/modifying/testing process to get it right before it's opened up to everyone

Hang in there :)

As I am sure you are aware, we couldn't be more grateful for the work that you and Sal are putting in. Thanks for the update.

I understand that the process is not short one, and is even more time consuming as we want it done right

Well, if you were able to get 2 rears done, I would do those, and send back 1 duff unit, and 1 good one. If not, I will have to stick a genuine one on, and could get the old one to you. But it will be a while before I could stump up dealer costs.:(

There's one more thing I have to do with the rears before they get signed off, at the moment I'm piggy-backing them off my single chamber E39 M5 pump as we couldn't source the correct EDC V8 pump at the time. I now have one sat here, it will be modified and fitted next week which will result in the rears running at a slightly higher (correct) line pressure. I'm not anticipating problems but they needs to have a few miles put on them to be 100% sure

...ps discovered some corrosion in strut itself! not uncommon i suspect:blabla:
Not uncommon unfortunately at the bottom of the leg. It's one of the concerns, this only works if there's an equal or greater number of re-buildable units coming back to him for refurb as there are going out...

Hi guys

OK, the reason for the delay was that Sal's car was off the road with a blown water pump so he could not get any mileage on the new front unit. They are pretty sure that the failure was caused by problems with the old shaft. These are now very old units on the whole and the wear is a concern.

Therefore...

What is being proposed now is that all overhauled units have new shafts along with the seals. This way we are starting with all new components. The shafts have been sourced along with all the other required components. I'll do a seperate post on this soon, but it's pretty much ready to go. Gearge K is at the front of the queue but with a production line rolling there shouldn't be much delay

The new shafts will have a slight impact on cost but the fronts will still be sub £200 all in

Can I now ask all of the people who have spare blown units they wish to donate to send them over please? The more they have 'in stock' then the more completed sets they can have on the shelf ready to send out immediately. If you PM me I'll give you details of where to send them :)

Hello Mike, this is Micha de Gast from the Netherlands. I (well actually my father) owns a M5 Touring 1994, with EDC. Both front shocks are leaking, so need replacement for the APK (=dutch for MOT).
I was very happy when I heard that you were talking about getting these shocks rebuilt.
When this company you are talking about is "operational", what is the timeperiod between sending you the old shocks untill receiving the rebuilt ones? What are the costs in euros?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,
Micha de Gast

***UPDATE***

I've had some personal stuff to sort out which has slowed things down a bit. I'm just putting together a new thread which hopefully can be posted later this week finalising things and telling you how to get your units rebuilt

Watch this space :)

ASAP would be great :)

I just realised that I have't posted the details for Davidoli and anyone else who has units they'd like to donate. If you do have units then if you could send them quickly so he can start building up some units for exchange

Please send all units to...

Attention Jon Slenzak
Sportsline Suspension Limited
The Technical Centre
Unit 1, Glebe Farm
Turweston, Northamptonshire
NN13 5JE

But PLEASE do not contact him about rebuilds, all enquiries will need to be done via the thread I'm writing at the moment

Patience, nearly there...
