EDC rebuild update

A few people have been asking me what's going on with this so I thought I'd update everyone

I was sick to death of this on-going EDC drama so a couple of months ago I started to seriously research a solution. After much searching I found a specialist suspension company who had the ability, but more to the point had the will to help us. These guys have many many years of experience with all manner of road and race suspension, they specialise in rebuilding old Ferrari and Lamborghini shocks amongst other things, and the boss is a good guy which is so important in these situations

Bottom line is that he's willing to help us. He currently has 2 front and 2 rear units in pieces and he's sourcing all of the necessary seals and gas sacs. They have the ability to manufacture their own seals if necessary so he's not anticipating any problems. There's nothing complex in the units and he's quite confident he can turn these around for us. Rebuild units would come totally refurbed, repainted and would be tested on their suspension dyno before being released. This is not just a hydraulics company, this is a bona fide suspension specialist who has all of these facilities in house, blast cabinets, dyno etc etc

The plan is the same as it always was, he'll hold a set of refurbed units in stock, people will buy them from him and pay a deposit which they will get back when they return their own units which will be refurbed for the next person

Target price is £100 per rear leg and £150 per front leg inc. VAT

I should be able to update you again next week. We will need to get him all of the blown units we have as there will be occasions where a solenoid or hardened shaft is too damaged to re-use so he has to salvage parts from another leg. Having said that, they can source the solenoids direct and manufacture their own rods if necessary but it would put the price up dramatically so while there are so many blown units available they might as well be recycled

More info soon :)

Yes , good stuff Mike........I am not entirely sure what happened re the Leeda rebuild situation but hopefully the failed dampers that were left with them can be retrieved and rebuilt in due course .....

I'm sure that Faz will update us ......

Was not going to post on this thread as, so far, its more of the same.
Dampers are simple...
Its all straight forward.... (Yes, it is when its all in bits)
Just got to get the parts to repair. ( Great, we had all the part no's of the topseals etc....problem = Boge. They will not supply parts to repair.
(so tried other seal manufacturers)
We can make tool up for new seals etc... ( No reply, see old thread)

I spent time & my own resources to progress a long term problem.
Leda went bust...( they must have known when we were sitting there with them David !)
The receivers sold what was left of the company on & Leda exist in name only & the name has relocated to Derby or Wiltshire.
They could not return our parts...no one knew where they were & recievers had the building locked.:grrrrr:

Ok.
When I see a set of tested working EDC fronts on a car, I will happily kiss & cuddle the person responsible.:15: (could be your lucky day Mike !)
Not to pour water on Mikes fire.
I am 100% behind him.
But I am also as hacked off on the subject as he & many of us are !

I wait with baited breath....no seriously, I do !

Very good news. It is sad to think how many people would have kept EDC if rebuilding had been cracked years ago.

Anyway, I have my old shocks in the garage so let me know where to send, or when the next car meet Is and I can give them to someone.

Best

Brilliant news Mike.

And well done on succeeding where so many others have failed.

For me personally, the biggest worry of owning my car is the dampers. I'm just changing a front as you know, and it will be great to be able to get a more cost effective solution in future.

Dare I say that this might also alleviate the fears of potential owners and affect the residuals.................???

Anyway - well done mate,

R

EDC repairs ?.......This will be wonderful if it can be cracked.......150 pounds for the front ?

I can't believe it......a friend has a complete set and when i come over ( If this can be done ) I'll bring them along.

Mike...you may be inf or a whole load of hugs and kisses soon !.......now at times like this wouldn't you wish there were more female members here ! :15:

That's excellent !! - further forward than usual perhaps then......thanks for your efforts, irrespective of the end result......

I replaced one on my previous M5, and if I'd kept the old unit, you'd be most welcome to it...ouich

Phillygoat - a brief summary of EDC can be found here ;

http://www.bmwworld.com/technology/edc.htm

BMW modify the system on a per model basis I believe, ie an M5 will be different to a 750i, but the technology behind it is the same......

G`day lads.
As ewerybody are so very happy about this and everything seems to be sweet just now, I thought I`d complain a bit.
D4mn!!! I was set on just biting the bullet and ordering four new shocks at 950eur a piece front and 800eur a piece rear + the little bits and pieces....as the parts are 30% cheaper at the place where i`m going to spend my vacation(in 4 weeks) compared to the prices in Norway, this (maybe) focks up my plans totally. grrrrrrr
Should I postpone the EDC replacement? My shocks are not leaking(never have been) but the fronts are quite sloppy I think(no big noises though) and front end corners are quite easy to push down a good deal. I recall(totally) that the car used to be stiffer before. :dunno:
210000kms on the original shocks now......:grinyes:

No, good work Mike, really appreciate it. Fantastic effort. Still, I had thought that I`d order all the parts this friday.....:dunno:

I thought long and hard before posting this. The original plan was to get the rebuilt rears on my car and do a few miles to test them before posting. But I mentioned it to a few people and one thing led to the other...

You are a perfect example why I decided to post it now, personally I'd be very sad if I'd just paid out to replace all 4 legs from BMW only to read the next week that there was now a rebuild solution

All I can say is that if I was not comfortable with the company I was talking to then I would not have started the thread

As people have before me, all I'm trying to do here is finally find a solution for us all. After the debacle with Garcia and LEDA's unfortunate demise I just wanted to nail this down once and for all. I'm not doing it for the glory, I don't give a damn who finally solves this, as long as SOMEONE does. The plan is to put the deal in place, do a long post explaining about the company and what they are offering, give details of how to get the units exchanged and then hopefully it can be sticky'd for evermore so people can just get these units changed with no drama as and when they need to. I just want to stop the EDC problem being such a Goddam issue which is causing people to junk this great system because of exorbitant costs

Once it's all finalised I'll ask the suspension boss to post in the thread so everyone has a direct contact to talk to so you can all then make your own judgement as to whether you want to run the rebuilt units or opt for new ones from BMW. It's all about being able to make an informed decision, I'm just putting the pieces in place so you can decide what's best for you

Realistically it won't be for a month or so I wouldn't think. Ideally I'll get the rears back and try them, then assuming they are ok people can start ordering. I'll have more of an idea next week, I'll post as soon as I know...

Well I've got 2 more fronts here that I've held back, I just wanted to give him enough to be getting on with. Lets hold fire and see how this plays out over the next few weeks, we don't want to have another situation where we all send our units off then there's a problem. He has all the legs he needs for now :)

Mike,

Really good news - too late for me personally as I re-did my fronts last Autumn.

However, rears appear to be original so I have no doubt I'll be calling on this service at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Will watch developments on this subject closely........

Terry.
