And while i`m in a typing mood. Yokohama AVS?

Final query for tonight.

I am going to need two new rears soon.
In the wet I do not drive fast. In fact I drive like a girl.
(I had a big smack in a 2.8 v6 4x4 sierra in `91 in the wet)

I want to get 2 x Yokohama AVS Sport for the back and replace the two front with the same when required.

I have the bigger 9" rears, (optional on the early 3.6), currently wearing the 17" 255 tyres.

Thoughts please, as these are supposed to be the best, but performance at speed and cornering grip in the dry are important here, I won`t race in rain.

For anyone in the UK, what are you paying for these ?

Thanks again guys.

Ivan.

Hi Ivan,

I dont know much about the tyres u mention, but i just put four Goodyear F1`s on.They are excellent in wet and dry and are the same as what was on when I bought the car.

Fronts 235/45/17 £120 each

Rears 255/40/17 £125 each

Both from my BMW main agent in Preston

I have it on good authority that the new Yoko AVS are not a good tyre. They were replaced in the last 6 months with an updated version of the excellent original AVS.

I would suggest Bridgestone S02s if you can stomach the cost, or F1s if you can't!

This is strange.

On this board, in earlier posts (I remember looking thru the archives when I found this site) the Yokohama was highly praised, and there was talk of how the M5 was particularly suited to the AVS, because the edge wall of the tyre was rounded compared to other tyre designs of Yoko and other brands.

According to the post, and they seemed informed, this allowed the tyre to deform in a way that helped the heavy car that the M5 is to keep a better contact patch with the tarmac. You of course know the weight of the E34 M5 is not 50/50 as the other Fives.

If my memory serves me well, the newer version was even more praised, as this characteristic was enhanced in the later version.

Admittedly, the tyre in question was a 18", not a 17", but the writer was adamant that in a car that puts such an unusually heavy weight over the front wheels would have benefitted from this AVS Sport tyre.

This was my first choice, as I said before the dry handling was a priority over wet performance, but the Bridgestone SO2 was my second. Just to confuse the issue more, most printed reviews give the SO2 the marks over the new SO3, yet no tyre dealer where I am rates them this way around.

Is there anywhere on the web that has done a comparison of tyres on our car or a 5 series in general? I cannot take an opinion of a tyre that is good on a 3 series or other small(ish) car like this, against the rear engined 911 type Porsche, when I have a lump of 70`s M1 engine weighing MY car down!!

I think that as there is a little life left in the tyres I have, (not yet illegal, more that winter approaches), that intelligent and objective replies to this post that I read over the next few weeks, may sway me to the Bridgestone SO2.

I have to admit I hadn't taken into consideration the weight distribution of the M5, and the guy who told me about the AVS was running them on the worlds fastest road going 911, so its an entirely different beast. For what its worth, he tested all the main brands of tyre and rated the Pirelli P Zero Rosso top, with the S02 second.

I have a set of 18" BBS with the older AVS on for track days, and a set of Bridgestone S02s on the 17" 'throwing stars' that the car will wear normally. However, as I haven't even got the car yet, I can't tell you anything about them I'm afraid! If you are still looking in a month or so, I'll be in a position to give you a report on the 2 tyres if you're interested.

Hi, I used to have Michelin Pilot Sports on my 3.8 and they were excellent, superb feel and grip wet of dry! had some S02's once before on a Sierra Cosworth and they were horrible, it might be different of course on the BMW but I'll never use them agian on any car!
I now have an E36 M3 with Michelin's and again there fantastic.

Ivan,

To give you my own perspective on tyres I've used on various BMW's:

Pirelli P-Zero (Yellow)

Had a set of these on my 3.8 M5 (235 front, 255 rear). Average in the wet and OK in the dry. Expensive but not as expensive as S02s.

Bridgestone S-02 Potenza Pole Position

Superb in every respect but they don't last very long. I went through about 3 sets on my E36 M3 Evolution. Excellent dry performance and unbelievable wet grip.

Michelin Pilot Sport

Original tyres on my E46 M3. OK but nothing special.

Pirelli P-Zero (Rosso)

I now have a set of these on my E46 M3. I went for non-standard sizes (245/40R19 front, 275/30R19 rear). They seem better than the Michelin Pilot Sports in the wet (despite being wider) and offer better grip in the dry.

I imagine this would also be a very capable tyre on the E34 M5 and certainly much better than standard P-Zeros.

Hope this helps,

Ian.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info.

What do you class as "not long" on the SO2s.

My insurance caters for just 5000-6000 miles a year, which is all I do, living very close to work.

So for me, a tyre that lasts say 12000 miles instead of 30000 miles is a little more bearable as this is about 2 1/2 years (!) motoring.

Do you have any pics of your car anywhere. 275 has bought a huge grin to my face, and I would love to see what design of wheel you chose.

When and if my 535i is fixed, I am considering transferring the gearknob, number plate surround, badge, all things M5 and the and Turbine wheels to it, and purring to work in that.
Then buying some new wheels for the now completely "stealth" M5 and sticking a 525 badge on the back. Could be a laugh!!

Ivan,

I'd usually class "not long" as 12,000 miles of normal driving on the public roads. They also tend to turn to sticky rubber quite quickly on a track but are still awesome.

The 19" wheels I have are the factory options for the new M3. You can find some pictures here:

My M3

These are with the standard 255's at the back. I don't have any pictures with the 275's yet, but they do make the wheels look more balanced. The Rear wheels are 9.5" wide and are way too big for 255 section width in my opinion (the tyre looks like it's stretched to fit).

Ian.

Ian,

I see what you mean about the rears looking stretched on.

Will look great when the bigger ones are on.

Thats a top looking car. It`s so smooth in the design, looks like doing 100mph now !!

I`m going to have to go and polish mine tomorrow now !! Thanks to you !!! LOL.
