Does anybody know?

Hello E34ers.

A week ago, I posted here that my car was stolen. Now it is discovered. However condition is as follows

1) No coolant inside the reserve tank. Also not in radiator hose.
2) Whole rear bumper gone
3) Rear left tyre bursted and damage to wheel
4) Rear right tyre punctured and damage to wheel
5) A whole made to front left door 3cm under the keyhole
6) Radio is stolen. Wooden panel near radio space damaged
7) Kye sylinder at steering column gone
8) Small stuff inside car all gone

Now I am at stage to negotiate with insurance company how to fix it.

Since M5 is so special and so, even a BMW dealer has a little experience to fix it. So if anybody knows a special shop or garage that is good at handling E34 M5, please let me know.

However, it is true that I cannot export wrecked my car to outside Ireland, a shop in Ireland is highly appreciated.

Lo there,

The problems you have with your M5 arenīt so bad...except the first one ! It is very strange, why there isnīt any coolant ? How many miles did they drive since they stole it ?

When they steal a car like that, they ussualy take the parts and sold them.

Iīm sure the dealer can help you on this.

Yes, that's question. The grage people said theft ran engine too much in 2nd and 3rd gear and this led engine to overheated. This is the reason why coolant is gone.

What I really hope that reason of it is because just water pump was gone instead of overheat. If sever overheat was the reason, engine block might be damaged and this means whole engine needs to be replaced. This costs almost equal to buying some of used M5 itself, doesn't it?

I think so.

Well, if the water pump is gone ( sold ) you have to think that this is why you have no coolant. I donīt think that they wanted to destroy the engine as they have to sell the parts in GOOD CONDITION !!

Just my opinion.

Too bad to learnt your story Momo.

I'm afraid that your thieves were not professionals but only sought to have some fun with a fast car. M5s are very difficult to sell even in pieces because they are very rare and can be traced back easily. I suspect they stole it for a 'saturday night rodeo' or to break a bank...

My best thoughts

PS : did you have the alarm and code when it was stolen ?

momo5,

I don't know if you have lived in Ireland for long, but my experience is that cars here are stolen purely for joyriding, as opposed to stripping for parts. Reason being that it is a very small country, so the chances of finding a car back are relatively large and the market for parts very very limited. Also, the number of 'special' cars in the country is small, eg there are only 12 E39 M5s in the whole country.

Due to the massive insurance premiums, many Irish youths can not afford to drive a car legally and sadly revert to joyriding...

I know of 1 other E34 M5 driver in Ireland, I will send you his contact details by Private Message. I am sure he will be able to advise you a good garage.

Best regards, Kees

ydelta, keesdh

Thank you for your post. You guys guess seems right. It is apparent that theft's purpose was joy riding.

As keesdh says, the insurance premium is sky-high in Ireland. I spent very hard time to even get a quotation itself.

My M5 is left-handed which is rare in this country; I am a foreigner whose record does not exist. And furthermore, special high performance car, M5.

These factors frighten insurance company and they refuse to recognize my no claim bonus in my home country that had given me 60% discount.

Then the premium rate is over $3000 for full comprehensive coverage. Surely young guys cannot afford this.

BTW I did not have alarm. Also I did not set code. The code security was not recommended to arm when I bought the car. The dealer said that since on board computer often gets malfunction and if code is armed, the car cannot be used.

So, since I bought the car, I've never used code security but seems it is time to start to use it if my car can be fixed and come back to me.

Momo5,

If you get the M5 fixed, I would recommend at least fitting a switch to manually disable the electric fuel pump somewhere in the interieur. Although it will likely not deter professional thieves, this should be a fairly effective way to have the car protected from joyriding. Also, I would advise removing all the badging on the car.

FWIW I have a 1999 Peugeot GTi, with 7 years NCB the insurance premium is still over $1500.

That is a good advice. I did it and I love the car in a stealth mode. However, I keep the badge for rare occasions when I want to show off a little bit

Keesdh,

Yeah, that might be worked. Some of my friends in home country made manual activate switch for cooling fan although this is for prevention of overheating.

Ydelta, did you add manual switch of fuel pump by yourself? If you do, please let me know line connection.
