Repairing EDC dampers

I know one of the guys on the board was aiming to set himself up to repair these damned things, but in the end, nothing came of it.

Well a mate of mine runs his own business (making/repairing drain cameras, of all things) and he's a fantastic engineer/fabricator.

I mentioned the EDC shocks to him the other day and he said he'd consider having a look at them to see what can be done.

I think this may be a stupid question, but are you guys still interested in pursuing this?

Hi Rob
Yes, Garcia was stationed in England for a while.
He was looking at repairing the rear dampers.
It all went quiet when he moved back to the U.S.
There has been some success in isolated areas of the world with repairing the rears.
No durability data though.

No one has successfully fixed a front sealed EDC damper to my knowledge.
These fail more frequently.
I'm not optimistic about the fronts due to their construction methods.!

I'm certainly interested but dont have any failed dampers to trial.

Cheers
Farrell

OK dudes - some of you guys know a LOT more about these cars (Farrell, Cyrus etc) than others (me!), so are you willing/able to assist with what technical info you know to assist my mate if he has a look at the dampers?

Rob
The overhaul issues.
Cleaning.
Sourcing of parts which is mainly the pressure seals at the top of the damper.
Welding the damper back together within tolerance.
Successful pressure test of the sealed unit.

Having the equipment to complete the whole series of operations is a ***** of a task.

I will help all I can.

Cheers
Farrell

Please take my name out of that list - I know jack about these cars.

It would be nice to see EDC dampers getting rebuilt rather than us lot getting wallet raped all the time.

I'm sure we can source an old damper from somewhere to experiment on. Can companies who build shocks in the uk like say GAZ, Leda and Spax not repair these dampers?

Actually Sal
Your contacts with some of the UK aftermarket damper companies could be of use if Robs efforts with his friend get into difficulties.

Cheers m8

yes FFS, do Burton's!

As a matter of fact, my old man is looking into overhauling my SLS shocks. But I know it took him about 3 1/2 years to do my parents' bathroom amd the stairs carpenting is still in primer paint only. He's definately up for the job, but I don't expect anything this part of the decade

From what he looked at, its a pretty straightforward job. Just needs some fancy welding. Gee, the man can even weld 10 yards under water, so I am not worried about that one.

Wout

Hi

My rears is just started some small leaks, so will be great if rebuild can be made.

I talk to a guy in Italy last year, he told me that he´s rears was rebuild.
I can also try to contact him, and find out were the rebuild was made.
