Be careful!!
My M6 was checked out by ML prior to my purchasing it in 2005 and the bill to fix what they missed is currently running at A$25,000 (thats about 10,000GBP). A large part of the problem has been caused by dodgy patch up rust repairs probably about 5-7 years ago. Funnily enough ML sold the car to the previous owner in 2000 with all the "hit list (incl rust repairs)" fixed.

That time frame would be coincident with my own experiences.
Lets hope things have improved.
I would be very interested to hear members comments on the current status of ML.

A mate of mine had a red E30 M3 that was serviced and ( at least once) sold by ML. Car was the business and it seemed to be well kept.

He reckoned them amongst the top M-car experts, although not cheap.

I must say that I heared some bad stories about them by thrustworthy people, but my only personal judgement will stop at their high prices for now. Which is not a crime.

Obviously your being in Australia counts this out, but I often wonder if it's in a garage's interest to give a favourable PPI in hopes that repairs will come to them?

I took my car there a couple of times and had heard about other members bad experiences previously, and was careful to inspect all their work. I have to say - of what they have done it has been faultless. I have only taken my car there as of 05 and 06. They replaced the steering rods and diff seal and I very thoroughly inspected it all with the car in the air. There were no issues I could see. Seems I've had bad experiences of PMW so far but good ones with ML. They did quote loads to replace the sills which were dented in from a jack but this was unneccessary and would only be to restore it to getting on for new condition.

I believe that with any dealership, main or independent you should go in with your eyes wide open. These guys are in business to make money and some are better than others. My opinion of ML is good so far, I like their approach, they are not as expensive as some and the work they did on my car before I purchased it was excellent. However I have also used Birds and found them to also be good, very different in ther approach but know their stuff. ML will get my work when needed but its worth carefully looking at quotes and if not happy raise merry hell.

I'd say I've had a positive experience with them so far. I bought my car from them in August 2002. It was perhaps a bit expensive but Tony said it was one of the best he had come across and to be fair the car hasn't missed a beat since. The extensive pre-sale check forgot about the driver's door seal and the high intensity windscreen wash ( but the headlamp's one works ) but nothing else. They told me about the air pump which like's to scream in the morning but were honest enough to say that they could do it but it would be 300 pounds and would fail again in a couple of years.

When I had some initial queries about servicing issues Barney was very helpful on the phone.

Can't speak for the servicing as I'm so far away that it wouldn't be practical.

I've had a poor service from them. I believed their chat about the cars and bought one from them, however 40 miles down the road there was a racket from under the engine which was diagnosed to the cruise control unit, I just don't think they did the hit list properly and paid lip service to the clients. There were forever some sort of issues usually when I had driven 30 miles away and Barney was usually knocking some money off or one time they even delivered the car to my house. The last fault was when Barney told me that the battery would only stay charged for 2 weeks on average in these cars if they were not used as I had an electrical fault. I could not believe this, they replaced the battery and then what a surprise the fault came back and with my limited knowledge I then traced it to the alarm unit and I got a firm to fix it. Funny it was because ML contracted someone to fit the alarm in the first place and then we had it recovered twice because something went wrong. For me it has been a big learning curve and I am surprised I still have kept this car and not torched it.
I now use the guy in Uxbridge who so far has been ok.
Without the knowledge on these forums I would be in trouble so thanks to everyone.
May be it might be an idea to set-up a preffered list of firms to help out the
non technical people.
Phil.

Had No probs with them

Had them service the beast 500 miles after the rebuild and asked them to check all. The checks were listed and all were done within a budget allowing timescale. All probs were true and not fabricated so no lies told to me

And they always had a courtesy car for me, a honda civic but still a car

Barney allways helpful as could be on the phone
