v-belts

Is there a location online that has the procedures for replacing the v-belts? My alternator belt shredded yesterday (luckily only a mile from home), and I figured I'd go ahead and replace them all.

How long would it typically take a home-mechanic to replace all three belts?

Thanks,

Andy

A couple of hours max. Make sure you don't overtighten them.

Should I be worried about something else that caused the belt to shred? The waterpump was replaced 5 years ago - about 45k miles ago. Should I replace that? How can I tell if waterpump is working or not?

What's the procedure for getting the fan off and the rest of the belts?

Squeeze the fan belt together to prevent the fan from slipping and undo the 32 mm nut. Remember it has a left hand thread. The water pump I would check for play or signs of leaks. Overtightening the belts will cause quicker bearing failures . A lot of mechanics tighten the belts too much.

They are supposed to be changed every inspection 2 (or was it 1?). I would change mine at 30K or less considering they cost next to nothing and are easy to change. Don't know why yours broke though.

Hehe. Might be a bit tricky getting the fan off, but should be possible. The fan belt is tightened by the alternator (saw tooth and gear nut arrangement). Power steering/SLS pump also has same system. The aircon belt is tightened by the air pump saw tooth and gear. Once you have a close look at it is fairly obvious. The procedure is probably in the Bentley manual (look for M30 engine as it is similar).

I decided to be lazy and have my mechanic do all three. AAA towed it there an hour ago. Shouldn't take him more than an hour, maybe, right? I figure by the time I even get the belts (my friend at Bavauto didn't even have them in stock), pay for shipping (or dealer costs and tax), scrape my knuckles around inside the engine comp't to undo everything, and put it all back together, I'd probably have spent 1/3 cost of mechanic, and the high side of 3-4 hours most likely (finding correct tools takes time, and maybe money!)

thanks!
