topping up a steering fluid leak

My 92 3.6 M5 is leaking steering fluid from the rear shocks and seems to be leaking more steering fluid from around the engine. I am guessing thats where the pump is and its leaking from the pump. I am selling the car tommorow and the buyer will be driving it across ontario, canada from ottawa to toronto. Thats about 500Km. I dont want him to have any problems so I am wondering what kind of steering fluid do I need and where do I top it up? Also wondering if there is a warning from the computer when the level gets too low.

Does your next owner know that SLS repairs are a little costly?

yes he does know. it costs 1200 $US for the sls and about 3 hours labour. or you can revamp the whole thing for aftermarket that will cost about the same but with new springs/shocks all around.

I think you top it up from the power steering fluid reservoir as normal. The SLS seems to use the same system.

I am sure other members will correct if I'm wrong. My 3.8 seems to work that way.....

Dronfield M

The SLS system is not on the 3.8.

Kenanov

Pentosin knows two types, the one you need is written on the cap.

If I was you,I wouldn't be (sending someone) driving out with a broken / leaking SLS hose, as they can easily blow. HAd that on mine. Risk is that you damage the PAS housing or more, and the pentosin will cause quite a mess on the chassis.

The 3.6 comes with SLS. The rears use the power steering system to supply the fluid and are electronically adjustable.
The 3.8 comes with EDC. The fronts are self contained units (not connected to the power steering) but have electronic valve adjustment. The rears are like SLS in that they use the power steering system to supply the fluid and are electronically adjustable.
The rear dampers on the EDC are therefore similar to the SLS system.

The sls system IS fitted on the 3.8.
The sls valve sits above the differential with the ride height adjustment torsion arm attaching to the rear anti-roll bar.
CHF11S is the recommended hydraulic fluid as it supports Pas & SLS (3.6) plus EDC 3.8
This is critical to maintaining the integrity of the self levelling seals.
Its the same spec that Citroen use when supporting the PAS & self levelling spheres of the Hydropneumatic suspension from a common reservoir.
