I'd like to investigate the buzzing noise that seems to eminate from the top left area of my dash and or gauge cluster. I assume it's a royal pain to get in there but what exactly is involved?
I know the gauges are electric and therefore there are no wound cables that could be the culprit. How about the inner workings of the gauge bodies themselves though. What goes on inside those?
If I can sort this out then the only thing left would be my haywire alarm. I'm a little scared of having a prefectly working M5 though. Inviting disaster and such.
The instruments are held in place by just two screws at the
top of the binnacle, most manuals state you must remove the steering
wheel to squeeze them out but if you are careful (and move the wheel
back on its adjustment.) they'll come out just fine.
Before you do though...check the speaker grill on the top of the dash
(next to the window demister) these are very fine mesh metal & can
"fizz" if not fixed in properly.
Best of luck,
Alan.

Thanks Alan, are you suggesting this as a possible source for the buzzing noise?
Also , check the fixings to the black plastic grill found just below your windscreen wiper mountings and above the bonnet , as these can become loose and the vibration noise carry through to the cabin .
Good , Good , Good , Good Vibrations............dooh wop !

I had the problem with the plastic trim near the wiper arms at the bottom of thw windscreen on the outside.........very annoying. Replaced the plastic clips and all is OK.
Carried into the cabin quite bad, especially at "higher speeds" His Tonyness would disapprove of............
That noise was speed related - if it isn't that, and is on the inside, I assume it wouldn't be speed related ?

Hi.
My guess is that ist not related to anything under the dash. If I remember correctly, the buzzing sound is from th wiper motor. When you start driving the car (at least mine) the buizzing noise starts after approx. 30 yards. That is the wiper mechanism that engages that speed related pressure to the wiper arm. On my car it buzzes but I'm afraid it has no effect.
I would be interested in knowing what can be checked in order to make sure that the additional, speed relatated pressure is on.
You can't really check if after you stop the car 'cause by then the pressure has been reduced.

Thanks davidoli, I checked that one months ago however.

I don't think this is the case here. The noise comes on around 2500rpm and stops around 3300rpm. The pitch of the noise also changes with the rpm. I can also create the noise by reving the car while stopped in nuetral. Thank you for the suggestion though.
Alan, I held the speaker mesh down with my hand while driving and still got the noise. Scratch that one I guess, seemed too good to be true!

Ok so I finally got around to looking into the noise last night. First I pulled out the gagues cluster to eliminate that as a possibility. Yep, noise still there. However, as I drove around the back streets in first gear keeping the rpm in the magic "noise window" and ducking and bobbing my head around to see if I could get a better fix on the source (occasionally driving blind!) I noticed that the noise was actually coming from under the steering column area. The sound accoustics are sneaky in cars! I wasn't about the pull the dash but I did notice there are two srews holding that part of the dash in . The right screw was loose. I removed both screws and noticed the right one was missing it's washer. I haven't put them back yet as I need to find the correct size washer but even that bit of fiddling has drastically reduced the noise! More to come.
