Damaged oil pan

Son took spin and curbed the oil pan. The pan has cracked and needs replacing. The problem is that he car lost oil pressure and even after refilling the pressure wont come back.

How hard to remove pan and pump without complete engine removal? Any Idea on why I lost pressure while oil was still available?

If motor is done anyone need parts?

Hi John
Sump can be removed by unbolting the trans & mount & engine mounts to jack the engine up clear of the crossmember.
No need to remove engine for this.

The oil pump pickup migh have been damaged in the impact.
The engine should be ok assuming it was not driven hard after the impact.
You need to get the sump off first to assess the damage.

Cheers
Farrell

Maybe an air lock in the oil pump?
How bad is the damage? maybe the pump has been damaged?
I sure hope that he had the presence of mind to turn the car of after the curbing(how was he driving anyway?-diciplinary actions ) so the engine didn`t run without oilpressure

I think it`s possible to just hoist up the engine or lower the front axle/beam a little bit and then you can get the pan out and get access to the pump.

He was only going about 40 but the road had dew on it. He continued to school about 1k after the excursion. For disipline I painted his bike black and put a M5 decal on it.

Glad to know I dont need a complete removal. Now I just need some time to get under her.

having had the "hmm" same experience myself

If your son just cracked the pan, you should be ok.
Having dinged my own sump last year ...I know from experiance that it takes quite some time before you run out off oil.

First you will get an oil level warning with an audiable "ding" before your oil pressure light comes on...followed some time later by several non OEM audiable warnings from under the hood.

I would replace the sump a.s.a.p. and not turn the engine over if possible.
some tiny metal parts might be lurking in the sump waiting to be sucked in.

Oh and if you get a "breaker" sump instead of a new one... be very sure to wash out and clean the pan thouroughly.

My replacement apperently came from a M5 that had shedd its bearings.....you wont believe how much sludge and metal cam out of that pan...

While you have the pan off, check all bearings and bearing bolts and check the pump off course.
Could be just a bad sensor.

The weather broke and work slowed so I took the youth to school. Dropped the pan and inspected bearings and pump. All looked well so I put on new sump (from breaker). Motor mounts looked poor so they were also replaced. Fresh fill with oil go to crank. Blasted battery is done. Replace. Fire the beast up No Oil Pressure. Search here and try Stevie Sam method of priming pump and I'm back on the road. Slight pull to right and some wheel vibration will need sorting. Boy I love the pull in third.

I have 2 extra pans here in PA. 1 is brand new and the other is used. $450 for the new one... and $370 for the used. I think retail on these has climbed to over $650! Let me know if I can help you out!
