Speed camera detectors

hi guys
What's the latest law in the U.K about using radar and laser mobile speed camera detectors? I know the GPS units are perfectly legal, but are the radar/laser detectors still legal?

Also-- are the jammers legal? What do people use?

cheers

Never used a jammer or detector. Quite like the fear factor approach as it tends to keep me more focused when 'pressing on'.

Jammers are 'legal' so long as it conforms to legislation regarding the opening of a remote garage door. Detectors, ie Road Angel, Origin B2 etc and databases downloadable to GPS systems etc are also legal. Nothing however beats being alert to cameras and or keeping your GPS system updated. Jammers only work against lasers and I would not trust these personally.

Driving laws in Europe are quite different and I know both France and Be;lgium are very strick re speed detectors.

Could someone explain the gps system? Don't think that's used over here.

At the moment jammers (e.g. Lidatek, Blinder) are perfectly legal to use in the UK. Even when proposed legislation is passed to ban them, GPS units (Origin, Road Angel etc.) will still be legal. The difference is that jammers protect from mobile units whereas GPS only protects against fixed cameras.

Here is my installation which provides full protection imho:

Pictures of my OB2 and LE30 installation

GPS units have a (regularly updated) database of fixed camera locations. They use GPS to determine the vehicle's speed, heading and position and warn of cameras accordingly.

I wish someone did a radar detector that would plug into my Alpine nav screen and give the info on that screen rather than having to mount yet another box on show...

The GPS system is simply sat nav ( Global Position System ) and these are typically used for navigation although they have the position of current camera sites stored on them. They will not detect a camera or laser though as per the Valentine 1 .

I have twice been banned for speeding ....111mph down the A3 on a clear Sunday morning and 116mph on the M25 on a early winter's evening .Both times I was caught by a hand held laser device and clocked from over 500 metres away. IMO the jammer is the thing to have , as neither the Road Angel , Valentine or GPS do anything to prevent you being gunned when speeding .By the time the Valentine 1 alerts you to a laser , you have been clocked .........A speed camera results in typically a fixed penalty but no ban .

You definitely have the capability of GPS based detectors in the states- it just means you have some kind of GPS (global positioning system) with information about where cameras are located. These are great for known spots but not good when the fuzz are hiding away with a mobile detector van . I think we are lucky in the UK that it's one of the few places these things are still legal, by the sounds of it from the replies, cheers guys.

Depends on the speed that you are caught at. Will depend on the fine or ban etc. Also your driving record etc.

Mike - Can you not use the Sat Nav and down load the cameras? Or use some software for your phone?
