Tyres

Had a puncture repaired by National Tyres yesterday (philips screw in the tread) whilst there I asked for a quote on a new 255 x 40 x 17 rear PS2 tyre and was quoted £208. I'll stick with Costco I replied. The manager then said they have a price match policy and asked what I had paid at Costco. £155 I said from memory. He then tapped again on his keyboard and hey presto quoted £140 inc vat balance valve etc. Seems a pretty good deal for me and only 3.58 miles from where I live saves me the petrol costs to get to Costco.

Merry Xmas to all

Frank

Okay

So someone tries to screw you over, you tell them they are way off on the price, and all of a sudden they knock off 68gpb?

I'd happily pay the extra 15 quid at the guys that were straight from the beginning.

Or simply mention to the costco guys that National Tyres have beaten their price to at least give them a chance to reduce their margin in response .....

A 32.7 % price reduction just for asking shows what a mug they were taking you for in the first place as Wout rightfully mentions !

Unfortuntely this seems to be standard business practice in the larger chain style of tyre franchises.
How many private customers that visit these places will even query the price of a tyre?? - not many id wager.
They simply dont have to be as competetive in the marketplace as the smaller private tyre places to get by as their customer base is mainly fleet vehicles where the cost of tyres is never questioned by the driver.
Out of principle i would never use one of the larger companys as i know they are not keen on giving the average punter off the street a good deal.

I agree 100% Pete
I have always shopped around for tyres.
Its rare for me to go to the same place twice for tyres, though Jet tyres in Canvey Island have had more of my business than not.
Tyre outlets like many other motor trade related businesses are out to take advantage of the inexperienced & unwary.

Shop around & price match
It always pays off.

Cheers
Farrell

In holland, the -bruto- prices for tyres are not often used, not even by tyre or car companies.

Sometimes, a Conti can cost € 150 netto, and € 240 bruto

where a Michelin costs € 180 netto and € 220 bruto

Nobody really sticks to these pricings, usually we simply double the VAT so thats 20% margin on a tire, and if someone takes 4 or they are a bit more expensive ( like 18's) we tend to stick to 10-15% margin.
