Living with longer gearing

Most of you will know that part of the "de-bastardising" program my car has gone through has been the diff change from a 3.91 to the correct 3.23.

Now I've already said a few words before about how much better it is but I feel like saying more. This is the only place where I can come and talk about my m5 where people will actually read with a hint of interest.

The best thing that has happened is that I can hear that engine rev for that little biit longer now without doing silly speeds. I've never been in another 3.8 but all I have to say is what a noise! It's pure automotive porn.

Before, being in 2nd gear was a very short lived experience as the car would only do a maximum speed of a massive 50mph! Now, I can achieve well over 60mph in the same gear.

I find myself sometimes even slowing down a little to about 30mph just so that I have an excuse to put it into 2nd gear and hear the noise.

With the windows up it is just.....porn. NO wind noise to interupt , no exhaust noise - just pure induction/engine noise.

With the windows down - a different experience but still one that continuously puts a smile on my face.

Even the mighty Alpina B10 with it's visceral bass note and it's high rpm V8 roar does not match the S38's symphony.

I rememeber, 5 years ago, when I saw a blue wide grill M5 on autotrader with M parallels that i promised myself that i would have one of those. It's one of the promises I;ve made to myself which I regret not even one bit in fullfilling.

Now, I am going to book a track day where I can have loads and loads of run off area and some long straights where I can really enjoy this machine.

Sorry if I bored anyone with this! Just had to say it.

Sal

Sal,

I read your post with interest ;-) and whole heartedly agree. My 3.8 pulls just to 60 in 2nd with the 5 speed and 3.91 diff. 3rd is even more fun as it pulls to just over 100.

I like to do it with the windows slightly opened ~1" or so, which gives me a good mix of engine bliss AND the wind noise for a great sensation of speed.

Russ,

Your car must be rather rapid with that gearing. Most 3.8's come with 3.73:1 LSD's from what I know.

was a US only the 3.72 diff, and believe it was offered on the later 5 speeds as an economy modification. the US never officially got the 3.8 - is that right? Due to emissions etc...

Normally:

3.8's with 5speed come with 3.91
3.8's with 6speed come with 3.23
3.6's with 5speed come with 3.91

im looking forward to tueday evening Sal, I'll get my LE back from valve clearances done, throttlebodies balanced, diff seal done, new plugs, oil change etc, so can give it a good rag, as have been a bit cautious with it so far.

I might pop by, as am often nearby you - was in romford the other day in it, but didn't have time to swing by.

illjah is right, I have a 3.8 5 speed with a 3.91 rear diff. From what I've read the accelleration and gearing is nearly identical to the 6 speed.
