Variable Intake Manifold

Fellow M5ers,

I have started thinking about the variable intake and whether it is working. There is a bellows mechanism fed from some kind of pump just under the intake manifold (to improve the torque by varying the length of the inlet tract).

I have done some scientific sucking on the pipe and this moves the valve, but I do not think it is operating. Without a vacuum gauge etc.. How easy are these to diagnose/replace the pump/valve that is under the intake chamber??

Everything else seems to be ok, and revs hard and cleanly.. Just thinking there might be more!

Appreciate your comments

Simon

LE=3.8= without self-test as the valve operates via DME unlike 3.6

You can still test it by revving your engine (when oil temp is ok offcourse). Just pull the throttle linkage in the engine bay by hand (to full extend) and the valve should then open and close.

Problem me thinks!

Hi,

I did some digging around, looking at www.realoem.com for the parts and diagrams and following some pipes.

I think the tube (vacuum) should run to the end of the head, under the black plastic sensor bit on the end of the cams and then down by the waterways and exhaust part of the engine.. I assume to take a feed from the emission pump?

This pipe has melted and was just hanging there.. My valve never moves with revving or startup and so I have perhaps other things not working as well!

I have attached a pic of the pipework. Anyone have any ideas where valve item 12 is in this pic??

Cheers

Simon

This may help you in replacing all your vacuum hoses.

Thanks!! This is indeed useful. I have had the plenum off when I did the starter motor. According to your diagram the hose that I have traced to suspected nowhere town is 'Vacuum hose to air injection shutoff'

I think I need the plenum out again and checking all my hoses and their operation. I never get a self test and a guessing there is no vacuum in the system at all.

What we do to check the actuator is to put a blob of grease on the back of the screw, then, after you have warmed your baby up, is to give it full throttle a couple of times. Stop the car and check that there is grease on both sides of contact. Works every time.

No connection

Hi Yewcorner,

Thanks for this idea. I was thinking of ways to test this. What I need to look at now is what is the pipe that ends in a melted nothing towards the emission pump.. and what is this valve that I assume is fed from the emission pump (in the pic I posted).

Item 12 ..

Any ideas? I shall hunt around and perhaps ask the Stratstone BMW guys as they have the car for an Insp1 this week.. (great price as well).

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon (great name by the way... )

I had an issue with the this a while back at idle the car does not move the resonance flap as it appears it is controlled by the electronic brain and this will know that the car is not in motion and thus does not need this to operate.

But after using the "blob o' grease" test it was proved that it was working so I was a happy person. That was the next thing to check but Yewcorner beat me to it.

Hope this also helps.

Simon
