Maintenance

O.K. Guys,

I'm still gutted I didn't make the most recent 'ring trip.

However, looks like it's done well for the U.K. BMW Parts subsidiaries.

Mine is getting hammered up and down the motorways at the mo - I've done around 7,500 in the last 4.5 months.

This weekend I'm fitting new pads all round, plus an oil change (I always do one inbetween services - with 2/3 green lights remaining.).

But a few questions, if I may (Faz / Stevie - you'll know the answers to these ?):-

1). Been driving around for past 4 days with 'Brake Linings' bong - today I start the car (and still have three green lights until next Inspection I is due), and I also get the 'inspection' light come on with a picture of a clock - despite having three green lights left ? (Is this linked in any way to me having an early Oil Service in Late April - the week before the first 'ring trip this year - when I still had three green lights still on ?).

2). Front end feels decidedly 'bouncy' and certainly more prone to 'hopping' over mid-corner bumps - much less well planted than usual - is this a sure-sign of front EDC shocks packing-up ? - Straight-line undulations still feel fine.

3). It sounds like the clutch is making a short 'singing' or 'chirp' noise on the very occasional heavy standing start - (it's not slipping - and It's only at the occasional traffic-light grand-prix) - is this the start of the end of it ? - I only had a brand new BMW Clutch fitted after it was stolen/recovered by Watford Milcars in August 2004 at 68,000 miles - and to be honest I try to drive with mechanical sympathy to the drivetrain (if not the tyres !!).

Car is due to hit 84,000 miles on the way home from work today...

Comments appreciated.

My consolation is that I have absolutely no oil leaks anywhere, since I had the rear diff seal done in April. (Illijah - get the 40/50 Le done before you kill the diff !), and it appears the Engine is getting stronger than ever, if not a little noisier..

Nearly identical miles to mine Terry!!

1) The inspection with clock is 12 month annual inspection, not inspection 1 or 2 service. Don't worry about it. The annual check doesn't involve checking much that you prob don't know about already.

2) Could be EDC shocks (have you replaced any so far? if not then you are probably due some...) but could also easily be bushes. Good excuse to fit some powerflex ones!!

don't worry diff seal, along with guibo prop coupling, throttle bodies balanced & valve clearances all getting done on tuesday.

the orinico colour is growing on me quite a bit, i'm still a bit dubious on the interior seat colour - part of the problem is i'm part green/grey colour blind, so they look like the mid grey leather i had in the 535i, but its gone a slightly funny colour in the sun or something!!

Hi Terry
The service intervals are all well & good when the car is new & within the dealers grasp.
They mean less & less as time goes on.
Firstly, the front end float is springs & or a dampers.
Brake linings..change fuid & linings at same time.
Check piston seals for tears & no piston seizure.

I change trans & diff oil once a yr. or 12k miles
Engine oil every 4000k miles or therabouts.
Coolant change every 2 yrs.
Spark plugs every 10 k miles.
Brake fluid bleed once or twice a year & change every two yrs.
Climate filter twice a year
Air filter twice a year.
fule filters every 18k miles.
Wheels balanced once ayr.

Cheers
Farrell

Mine's always done this too. Anyone know what it is? I wondered if it was something to do with the dual mass flywheel?

I'm back by the way boys!! See separate thread!
