Gearbox whine fixed - $72

One of the issues I had when I bought my car a couple of months back was the whine from the gearbox in lower gears - and I used it as a major bargaining chip too. Told the guy I had to factor in a new box.

Well, I fitted a new rubber boot that seals the hole where the gearlever comes up ($72 from the stealer) - the previous one may as well not have been there it was so torn - and instant quieter car. I cannot hear any gear whine now.

Ahh, if only all fixes were so easy and cheap.

I had this same problem. Old boot was so hard that when you used 2nd gear you could see the gear box.

Stop whining, get new boot

Kinda like my Porsche 944- pull out carpet in back - lots of transaxle whine- put carpet back in - all is quiet.

Hi Ian, great to hear that progress is being made.

- you should also notice that a lot less heat is coming up through the floor.

How did you get on with your dodgy alarm?

Cheers, Geoff.

Yes - that was an interesting one. I'm pretty sure it was the dud battery. I put in a spare that I had sitting around to replace the dud that was in the car, but I don't think it was charged enough - and I was only doing 20km trips, so it didn't get a full charge. I charged it for 24 hours and haven't had the problem since. I did a couple of other things at the same time - removed an old hands free mobile phone setup, removed the DVD / CD player and disk storage setups and associated wiring. I also pulled the drivers door handle and sorted that out - it was both loose and catching a bit. Who knows - but the problem is gone.

There are, of course other issues still requiring attention - including some that have arisen since I bought the car. My temp guage is now not working all the time (which I believe is a capacitor fix). One thing that the PO told me about after I handed over the dollars was that he had had the fuel guage sender replaced but that it didn't work correctly - goes to zero when off, but goes to 80 litres (of 90) when on - always, regardless of tank level. The consumption and range figures are fine in the OBC though.

I'll call past your place sometime soon - will let you know when I've given it a wash - and we can get a photo if you like.

Ian

Just use function 07 on the OBC, that gives a very accurate reading if fuel in the tank.

I look forward to that, Ian. Mine's in having the clutch slave changed at the moment. Should be ready some time next week.

Cheers, Geoff.
