Whats wrong with this pic

Ok, just so you get an idea, I drove the car today maybe 20 miles.

The oil on the cardboard is where its dripped while parked, the oil on the drive was after being parked 2 hours when i got back..

So whats leaking??

Steve

Also, what causes the transmission or diff to whine, and why would a clutch slip thats already been replaced twice in 2 years??

Rear main oil seal? Looks more like engine oil than gearbox oil?

Looks like engine oil on the cardboard to me.

Diff whines when on full lock at slow speed means its on the way out.

Your diff (is that it in pics 2 & 3 or is that your gearbox? Can't tell...) leak does not look significant, and certainly not enough to cause the spillage on the card.

Was that under the rear of the car then??

Clutch can get knackered with (ab)use. We all know you don't pussy foot around in the ///M so.... when did you last replace it? Perhaps you need to improve your heel&toe technique???

Rear main oil seal was replaced at the same time as the clutch was done, 05/05 roughly 20k miles ago.

If it has gone again, BMW parts come with a 2 year warranty?

Hi mate, pics 2 and 3 are of the back of the engine/gearbox.

I get a constant whining regardless of lock etc....

ok.

if oil has got into the clutch, that could cause it to slip.

Diff whine is normally pretty bad news, can you see if its leakking at all? My LE has a reasonable leak from the diff (its not getting used til its fixed) but is still silent. Def get the level checked and topped up if necessary, but it may be too late....

Looks like you are gonna have to check all the levels and see where the oil has actually come from? And then go from there. Sorry not to be an awful lot of help!

Al, back of the car is dry, no visible signs of any leaks at all.

The whine changes pitch with the engine noise, so as i accelerate (gradual) it gets higher pitched.....
