Fitting an E39 M5 steering column in an E34

OK, I know the steering wheel doesn't fit the E34 column but as I have access to the whole car and am probably using the steering box anyway, anyone tried to fit an E39 column into an E34? Any idea if it'll fit?

The wheel is pristine with lots of knobs, it's a 38,000 mile car

Begs the question Why? I have an e39 M5 steering wheel in my wifes 528 and in my opinion isn't as good looking as the 3 spoke e34 M5 one or the e34 4 spoker and why would you want to mix and match the interiors ?

Because my 1995 wheel has lost all it's coating and I've found it impossible to replace with the same model after over a year of looking, I would find buttons very useful and I like the E39 wheel. Plus I have this one here complete with column. I'll happily swap it for a mint 1995 wheel if anyone has one

And as I'm in the process of shoe-horning a 5 litre V8 into it I'm not getting too anal about mixing and matching parts

Steering wheels

A guy in put in a E39 M-wheel in his 1995 540i/6 without any work, he didn’t do it the hard way, so the airbag doesn’t work.
There are several owners in that have put in younger wheels in there E34/E32 cars, even Multi wheels.
Is the airbag part okay? I’m guessing you have the 4 spoke M-wheel? "The 3 spoke should be easy to find" If that’s so, you could call a guy in that’s has a M-wheel without a airbag, sitting in a Cosmos black 1995 M5 Limousine.
Otherwise I would recommend getting the 3 spoke sport steering wheel, that was a no cost option on the 1995 M5, looks more natural in the E34 than a E39 wheel, almost every 1995-96 E34 in the UK has that wheel.

Regards Stephan

No, I have the 3-spoke sport wheel with airbag that was only fitted to the 1995 I think. This one...

I bought a wheel like this, 2 month ago in Sweden, for €120, almost in new condition from a 1996 525i Touring that had some 10kkm on it.

You could buy a new one from BMW for €400-500 "without airbag" but a used one should any BMW junkyard have.

Ask around on other BMW boards, it should not be a problem to find one.

I must admit that the E38/39 series is equipped with the best dashboard etc ever to be found in any production car IMO. When I went from E34-E38-E34 the thing I missed the most in my current car was the steering wheel and the center console. The steering wheel just offers so much comfort in radio/tel/BC operation that its hard to get used to a car without such a feature.

My car however would NEVER see an E39 wheel fitted, although I am a sucker for the "round-center" M-wheel

I think it will easily look "too big" in the E34, same goes for retrofitting E39 OEM rims..They also always look too big on 34's, whereas 17" Tstars look like 15s on an E39, not to mention E38!
