3.8 takes one step closer ......

Another item off the list ticked today.

540iLE kindly allowed me to keep the 3.23LSD as my old diff started making some very odd deep vibrating noises going round bends. Thanks!

The tag on the diff that came out was marked S3.91.

Thanks to a kind member of E30zone who fitted the diff for me.

The difference can only be described as a +ve move in the right direction.

Gearing is spot on now and the car is much nicer to drive. I find acceleratioj to be better as I am not wasting time changing gears all the time. I had a short motorway cruise and it's so much better in 6th.

All that remains now is to remove the M5 badge at the front, sort out the red calipers and buy some bew headlight surrounds to alleviate me of the cheese grater effect.

My car is now getting to how I really like it and I am very likely to hang on to it for a few years now. Really is the best car all rounder I have ever driven and the ebst car I have ever owned. Not even the mighty Alpina B10 V8 tempts me anymore.

Thanks again to 540iLE for understanding my situation.

Sal

Had a proper drive earlier.

The car is actually quicker accelerating that before.

Moral of the story - do not shorten your diff ratio on a 3.8! it doesn't do anything other than rev too highly all the time.

Its slower than my 3.6 with 6speed and 3.91 diff!!! i think that final drive suits the 3.6 more than the 3.8...

After driving around for a few days now it's a much better car. It's definately quicker now, I can reach higher speeds down the same straights.

Just got to do 2 more things and the car is spot on. One of those being caliper repaint!

Yes, bought an orinico green LE, so big brakes, 6 speed box with 3.23 diff, 18" M-Parallels.

The box is like a dream, feels like its brand new, really really tight, and really quiet compared to my 6speed in the 3.6.

Here's my overly-negative first post about the car!!!
Upgrading from a '91 3.6 to a '95 3.8

Wicked - might have to drive up and have a look!

The brakes are superb if in good order. This is the one area you'll notice a huge improvement on over your 3.6.
