Windscreen Washers

My main windscreen washers have stopped working.

The intense screenwash function still works but the main washers do not pull anything through.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this malfunction?

Fingers crossed this is not going to end up costing a fortune to put right.

Either pump has failed or there is a break in the wiring. You should try changing the pump electrical leads to prove one way or the other.

When I got my car, wiring was a mess in the washer-tank department. I reckon I got it sorted, but it appears to be broken again or still.

The wires were extremely brittle in my car and the general socket setup is very fragile IMO.

Try looking into that first before detaching the actual jets in the bonnet as its easy to damage the paint when disassembling, you want to take those out as least as possible, i.e. when you are sure nothing else causes the problem.

Hey Wout

Are the sockets/wiring located beneath the water bottles? I need to do mine and also connect a new foglamp/outside temp harness, but couldn't see anything which might help.

thanks

Sounds to me that your jets are blocked. Try poking a needle in the holes as you operate the intensive cleaner. If this works then you need to clean-out the complete system by flushing it through with clean water.

If the intense function works then the jets are fine. It's most likely just a tube has disconnected between the the main reservior and the jets.

If the motor works, but nothing comes through the jets, look for a dribble of water appearing under the bonnet or around the headlamp washers. This should indicate the source of any disconnection.

If the motor isn't working, the problem is electrical - check fuses, motor and wiring.

Hi mate, I had this exact same problem a month ago.

All wiring was checked and we found it fine.

So we took the motor out of the intensive wash bottle and swapped it with the main wash bottle .... no intensive wash, but now the main one works at least, until I find a replacement

I don't have intensive wash, so I'm not sure, but it sounds from the posts below that the windscreen and intensive have separate motors.

The motor on my windscreen washers went on my old 540iLE with same effect. Replaced it for about A$25 from the dealer - so not an expensive part and about 5 minutes to swap it over.

Thanks for all of you replies.

I had a bit of a poke around under the bonnet last night. All wiring looks intact so am thinking it may be the motor. I will try taking the intensive motor out and swapping it for the main one.

Nice to here that a part may need replacing that doesn't cost a fortune.

Slightly off-topic but my intensive wash has a mind of it's own and will run at will (nothing to do with the 5 cycle wash of the main washers).

Anyone know where the intensive wash controller/relay sits?

Dave.
