Over the past two weeks I have discovered that my power steering gearbox is shot. I need a new one. I don't want to tackle the job myself as I think it would be too much for me to handle.
What would cause the power steering gerabox to go out?
It leaks like crazy!
The head mechanic at my local dealership said he'd never seen one go bad....so why do I have to be the first and unfortunate one?
The dealership wants $1850 ($1495 for a new steering gearbox alone!) I can't afford that. I know of a place in Michigan that can rebuild, yes even rebuild an M5 specific power steering gearbox using factory BMW seals and nickel plating the gears. And it's only $225! But the problem only being there...no shop will do that, because they won't allow my car to occupy a bay for 5 or so days while the part is shipped rebuilt and reinstalled.
So what do I do know?
I'd like to find a used power steering gearbox for a 91 M5 E34 if I could but I don't know where to look.
I am a new M5 owner...and so far in two months time I've had a water pump go bad and the power steering gearbox. What's next? I haven't even been able to drive my car for about a month of that 2 month time in owning the car. This is nuts! Luckliy I have 2 other cars to rely on.
If anyone knows of any way to help me out on what I should do I'd GREATLY appreciate it.
Thanks
Jay Wilkins
