Off we went again today,

Started with placing the seal lid on the back of the engine ( this is an alloy part and it also hosts two critical sump bolts, I didn;t like the way those screwed into the old part as the alloy loses strenght over time, and at € 78 you can;t be bothered ) Make sure to get the bolts new too, as they have spring-action washers which can only be used once and are not seperable.

After that, I decided to prep the gearbox. I reckoned filling it on the stand would be easier than filling it on the car, and those extra 1,25 kilos wont harm.

The box has a magnet inside the drain plug, so don;t let UUUUCSS Motorwerksen Automotive or alike sell you on one of those aftermarket:

Filling the box with 1,25 litres of special oil :

As the flask I got was a quarter US gallon ( 0,946 litres) I needed just 0.30 litres to make 1,25

Nice to see the gearbox thought so too :

Then the time came to fit the clutch set:

All new:

Box finally on:

Also replaced the center bearing for the driveshaft and the centering bushing for the driveshaft which didn;t want to come off gently:

Tomorrow we'll put the driveshaft, exhaust and some small bits on and see what she does!

Only put the interior trim pieces on today, will have to wait for proper color coolant and sparkplugs aswell as the cam cover gasket since I wanna check the valve clearances all along. Slowly getting there..

New seat trim sure brightens up the interior, a real treat for any car with light-colored interior..The real difference in fading can only be seen when holding the two parts next to eachother..

Man! You've spent almost a fortune and a half on parts alone! It's nice to see another M5 in top condition! I'll hire you when I have to do some work... Ticket and beer is enough?

Its alive!

Tonight, we finished the M5 ( for now)

Driveshaft going on :

After we put the exhaust back on ( new bolts, gaskets, hinges and rubbers) I flushed the engine with Forté engine cleaner , checked vital signs on the hoist again after shaking it down and all was OK ..

The accumulated bills : ( havent added them up yet, but will most likely breach a barrier I never wanted to )

The baddest of them all :

Cant put in words how good it felt to drive the car again, just got home and its very rewarding to only have the "brake pads" warning come on since I took the wires off that when mounting the front shocks ( they will be replaced by 345ers soon anyways )

Short impression :

The Koni suspension is very harmonic now, the car feels very nice and stable. The touring ARB is a fantastic upgrade IMO, the car is much more neutral (keep in mind that I have one inch increased track on the front and 265er rear tires)

Second,

The engine. Without the AC compressor and airpump, it seems to rev more freely. Also, changing all the vacuum, TB butterfly synchro, new rotor + distr , new plugs etc etc all made their effort. Car was never smoother and picks up like a dream from relative low revs.

Kept the undertrays off to monitor the engine and possible leaks etc the next days, but for now, all is in order.

It bloody well should be.

Glad to hear it's all together. It's about time. Keep an eye out for a gift from over the pond.

Cheers,

Brian

Hi Wout!
Nice thread, thanks for the story and pics.
Two observations to make,
1) undisguised jealousy about your car lift... I want one!
2) I get the feeling this project was a 'labour of love'
