535 90A alternator on M5 3,8l

One question.

Can I fit the 535 90A generator/alternator on my M5 3,8l. My OEM i damage I think. I got a very good price on the 535 alternator but will it work on my car.

I know I have to take the back of my OEM alternator and fit it in the 535 one but will the amps be enough.

It seems to vary, but M5s either came with a 110A or a 140A alternator.

If yours has the 140A, it would normally mean that you have sufficient electrical options to warrant it.

Let me guess, GSF can do you a 535i one for £100, but the proper unit is magically specific to the M5 3.6/3.8 and costs £500?

In that case you need to consider calling a breakers like FAB or infinicar and see if they can sort one out for you.

The 535i has the air intake/exhaust pointing up. At least one board member here has run an 110A unit as this without issues.

The "proper" unit is of course fed cool air from the downpipe going to the front spoiler.

What is wrong with the old Alternator? It may be worth getting the unit rewired if something burnt out, it is not a complex device.

Alternatively it may just be the regulator bushes worn or the unit gone, £8.

Regards

Ivan

Can't you still use the 535 one but you need to swap a bit of the M5 one to make it fit?

Stevie wrote this in a thread recently I'm sure.....

Yes, 535i one fits, but air intake goes up, not down.
That means you can't reconnect the pipework from the spoiler, unless you disassemble and transplant the rear cover from the M5 unit to the 535i unit. This is of minor consequence, the unit seems to work fine regardless, but that was on 110A units, not 90A.

The thread was more concerned, imho, with the query of whether a 90A unit is going to fail if the car is expecting to draw 110A or 140A from it.

Burn out, or fade away! lol...

Would it die, or just go flat out but be unable to recharge the battery as fast as it was drained, so the main batter goes flat?

Sounds like a job for FAEPOV!

Regards

Ivan

IvanDias:

The old one I´m going to fix. But the guy who has checked my old one couldn´t get spare parts.
I dont´t know the english words for the parts.
I´m going to see if another company can fix it next week. At this point I don´t think I will get the 90A. If I find one 115A or 140A I maybe buy that one and later fix my OEM.

I suppose it is indeed a question for FEAPOV, but may I just bring into account that the chance of being stuck in a traffic-jam with the aircon on (and thus the electric fan) with main-beams on and the rear-defroster on IN SWEDEN is as big as the chance of our Daz getting his former haircolour back without paint........

90Ah should do just fine!

Stevie:

You have a point there.

So you think it´s going to work. Perhaps I should try mounting the 90Amp alternator just for a short while. Until my one is fixed.
I want to do that because next weekend there is maybe Swedens biggest BMW meating. I woulden´t wanna miss that event
