I sold an M5 for a friend who takes credit for getting me interested in these cars. He had a Stebro. I had the car for 2 weeks while I sold it for him and drove it regularly. He always regretted getting it. His wife hated it and refused to go in it(this could be a good thing). Also, it was too loud if you wanted to have a pleasant conversation in the car and it got irritating on long highway drives. It did grab attention at a stop light.
My 2 cents is that the M5 exhaust sounds great and does not need to be improved upon. Call me cheap or tell me that I lack imagination but this is not a modification that I would ever think of doing, especially if stock was working perfectly.
The note of the stock E34 M5 will turn the head of a true enthusiast whereas any ricer with a trumpet sticking out the back end will get every tom dick and harry who don't know a thing about anything turning their heads.
As a daily driver, at least for myself, the constant increase in sound / noise level (as much as 6 db higher) would not be worth the boost in performance.
This is just my two cents on a car that I use for hauling the family, getting groceries and occasionally to take clients around for work.
If it was a dedicated track car or simply a weekend warrior, I would consider it ... but the thing is loud enough as it is.
I have a stebro on my e28 M5. It sounds awesome....at the track. Many compliments from other drivers about the sound but it is loud, car alarm loud - approx 85-90 db @ 50ft @ 4000rpm which was about my limit for daily driver use, past the limit for my neighbors. Not bad at all with the windows up and so long as I drive outside the resonance zone, fairly comfortable. Stainless construction is nice, delivery took forever, price was right. If I had to do it again, I would have gone with something quieter as I've since added a track pipe and what was at the edge of decency before is just obnoxious now.
Also, both the Eisenmann sport and race are TUV approved for use on cars in Germany - which suggests they couldn't be too loud.
I have a Eisenmann race system on my 540i and it changes the character of the noise significantly (giving the car a real V8 presence) without making it loud.
Even at the track, people comment on how nice it sounds, but quiet.
I haven't heard an Eisenmann on an M5 and agree that the M5 sounds pretty nice standard (wouldn't want to drown out that unique throttle body noise), but suspect that it would, again, primarily alter the character of the sound rather than its volume.
Cheers

Thanks for the info guys! Is the Eisenmann quieter?

I was certainly unsure and considered custom and Supersprint, as well as others like B&B.
In the end I narrowed it down to Eisenmann (it comes as a rear box only) and Supersprint cat back. I guy I know fitted a S/s system to his 540iLE and I was very disappointed. Really not that much different to stock - a bit louder - but the V8 presence just wasn't 'liberated'. So I decided to go Eisenmann.
And it was just what I was after. Perfect:hihihi:
Normal driving around town, attracts no attention. At idle, a soft burble. Under load, it doesn't sound like a big block US style V8, more like a quiet version of an F1 car - more a wail, than a roar - but still not too loud. I love it!
I have a bit of footage that I took off a Sony digital camera whilst at the track - but I have no idea how to get it into a format that can be uploaded onto a computer. I have managed to burn some of it onto a DVD, but it gets saved in 2 folders - 1 called VIDEO_RM and the other VIDEO_TS. I can't seem to do anything other than play them from this format.
Can anyone help me get it into WMV or MPEG or something useful?
And sorry to hi-jack the thread.

David, I'd love to hear a soundclip of yours...this is something that we continue to go back and forth on. Custom route or Eisenmann's cat-back.

You need to cut the pipes in front of the OEM rear box and fit the Eisenmann over the oem pipes and weld it sealed. I had mine done in a way that the original box could be refitted if needed.

So, there's cutting/welding required with the Eisenmann?
BTW, if you get the video/sound clip figured out, by all means shoot me a PM.

All my research suggested that there was little to be gained performance wise, so I was only after an aural improvement. And it delivered just what I was after.
Incidentally, I also have a K&N air filter which may contribute slightly to the sound. A full replacement intake may also assist improve the sound, but I have heaard that doing that can actually lose hp.
Cheers

Hmm...That's interesting. So Eisenmann want's like $900~ for a muffler w/ tips, essentiallly.

Yup. Clear case of the aftermarkets underestimating BMW's overengineering.
