Quick question about oil change

Just wondering whether I should pour some fresh oil in the canister or on the filter when doing my oil change, to have the pressure light go out as quickly as possible during the startup afterwards? Sorry for such a simple question, but I certainly want to do it right.

Btw, will the oil be drained from the oil cooler too, when changing it at 80-90 degress C?

Hi there

Its recommended practice to fill the oil filter housing with oil whilst doing the oil and filter change.

The oil in the oil cooler and oil lines will not drain when you drain the sump to do an oil change and there is no oil drain plug in the oil cooler, the only way would be to remove oil cooler, but to do that you have to remove coolant rad, as the oil cooler is bolted the coolant rad from memory, certainly mine came out with rad, not sure its worth going to that amount of trouble, if your car has regular oil changes

Thanks for your quick reply! Taking out the radiators when changing oil really sounds like over-doing it. I can hardly imagine any dealership doing that!

Sorry for dragging this thread up from the distant past, but...........

I'm doing an oil change before I go to the 'ring. Not done one before (left it to the normal servicing).

Having never seen the cannister type arrangement, my question is this:

Are the only parts I need the filter itself (114 290 631 38) and the O-ring (114 217 410 00)??

Yes Rob........you'd probably get away without the O ring if not absolutely necessary due to damage !

IIRC you get the O ring and sump plug washer when you but the filter from the stealer.

- that is correct. I think they are included with filters from ECP and GSF as well.
If you are concerned about the oil in the cooler you can always use a cheap 10/40 as a flushing oil once you have drained off the old stuff from the sump. A tad on the wasteful side but it can be recycled so no need to plant a tree.

When you buy a Oil Filter from the dealers or GSF or an independant, they should sell you a pack with the Filter, the large O-Ring for the canister, a tiny O-Ring for the end of the bolt that secures the canister and a new washer for the sump plug. I also find the main dealer also often supplies a new part 4, the washer for the canister bolt.


Parts number 3, 4, 6 and 7 here:

3 - O-Ring - 11 421 711 076
6 - O-Ring - 11 421 741 000
4 - Gasket Ring - 07 119 963 080
7 - Oil Filter Element - 11 429 063 138

And part number 4 here, the sump plug washer:

You can likely skip replacing the washer for the bolt on the canister, but should always replace the washer on the sump plug.

Tightening torques apply on all bolts please!!

Cheers guys.

Asked the stealer for the filter and the O-ring - he had the filter but not the O-ring.

Opened the box after reading your comments and found the O-ring, the washers for the bolt and the sump plug washer all in a little bag.
