Is this the standard BMW alarm (from factory)?

Hi guys
since buying my car I've been meaning to cut out an old alarm siren that's just been sitting loose in the engine bay, I assumed it was derelict because there's a second newer one, and where the sound came out of when the alarm went off.
Anyway, I decided to take the wire cutters to it today but after snipping 2 wires -pop- , oh sh1t. I was sure it was disconnected as i'd previously traced the wire under the carpet in the car. Anyway I disconnected the battery and finished chopping it out, then on reconnecting the battery got PPPP on the computer so expected the worst however that cleared after a few seconds and the C/L and new alarm is still all working OK so I assume it wasn't needed. Can you look at this and tell me if it's a factory fitted BMW alarm - and needed, or aftermarket? Do you all have this one?

OK- I saw it was a BMW alarm and assumed perhaps it was fitted later. Is it connected to the on board computer? - It was just loose in the engine bay, broken off from the bracket which is messily screwed in to the air filter housing! Where should it be mounted by default?

Hi,

That siren is a non ews bmw approved retro fitted alarm. This alarm was never supplied as a factory fitted option it would have been either fitted at thorne or dealer.( Factory DWA has a small siren that is hidden)

It will be wired in to the cvm/zke and the control unit will be under the back seat( could be else where but very unlikley).

I would recommend that you check and strip it out the are common for the fuel interupt burning out.

If you want to see a picture of the control unit someone is selling one on Ebay(Do not know the seller and have no connection).

Cheers

Stuart

hi there

That is the accesory retrofit alarm sold and fitted by many BMW dealers, what you have removed is the siren, which if in good working order should have sounded for about 20 min, as it has its own back battery inside, and has a key switch to turn of the siren and the alarm in case of failure.

The control unit for the alarm is usually fitted under the rear seat, but could also be under the dash. if my memory serves me right, the alarms where manufactured by serpistar an italian co for BMW and other manufacturers also, I think VAG also used for them a while, later versions did not have the key switch on siren and had a key switch fitted inside the car and the siren was fitted next to the wiper motor, so gaining accsess to the siren means removing wiper arms and plastic at the base of winscreen

I have taken a foto of my remote and keys, you should have been handed a set of these when you purchased the car

regards

Thanks for all the reply's. There is a control unit under the back seat with a piece of antenna wire. I disconnected this prior to removing the alarm, it deoesn't affect the operation of anything so all this must have been disabled when the META system i have now was fitted, it was just a bit disconcerting to get a spark when removing the siren for an alarm I thought was disconnected.
Skerr - How come these are common causes of the fuel interrupt burning out? - Do you mean on removal of the alarm or keeping it fitted?

cheers -Greg

Hi Greg,

That picture is a later 3G EWS system remote yours would have been black with one button.

I have found in the past that dorment alarms cause problems.
The control unit has a transistor switch for a less resitance path for the current this should only activate when the vehicle is to be imob. but when this goes wrong it can be a very expensive to find if your tech has not seen it before as you get 12 v at the pump and it drops but the pump does not activate. I have seen many a BMW with a new pump for no reason.

Cheers

Stuart
