Rear view mirror adjustment dead

My driver side rear view mirror adjustment is not working for a long time. Since I am the only driver I did not try to fix it, I always thought it is the selection switch problem. Today I got a new switch and it still does not work. One funny thing is when trying to adjust driver side mirror, it cause a clicking sound from passenger side mirror but no movement. Anyone has the same problem?

I think the clicking sound indicates that the motor has reached the full extent of its travel in that direction. Something's a bit iffy if the switch is working backwards, though...

Karl,

I have two spare mirrors with motors (the things you buy when looking at EBay too much) figured I would get them "just in case" I'm going to sell the M5 in a couple months so if you want them PM me.

Hi Are the motors you have for memory mirrors? Do they have more than 4 wires?

4 wires--white, brown, green, black. Unfortunately the person who salvaged these mirrors just went ahead and cut the wiresalthough I'm not really sure if they have a connector elsewhere--I was quite sure it would have been easy enough to cut and splice something together that would be watertight.

I had the same problem once. In my case there was a loose wire (I believe the white one) that was loose on the DRIVER side mirror. Strangely enough the driver side worked fine, but when I tried to move the passenger side, I heard a clicking noise. Just like a relay that engaged...

Guys
The motors fitted within these mirrors are bullet proof.
I have always found the issues with mirrors & sensors & lights to be wiring related.
Occasionally, you find that you have some dirt or corrosion on the connector terminals that short the wiring.

You have to check the wiring to the mirrors on both doors so I would recommend getting a dozen of the door trim push clips & remove the cards.
Examine the connectors & wiring carefully & clean the terminals with switch cleaner or white spirit.

There may be a small section of wiring damaged where its has touched the trim & vibration from yrs of vehicle use has got the better of it.

RE: Door panel and rear view mirror removal

You mean remove the door panel? I have no clue on how to proceed.
Can anyone show bit tips on door panel removeal and mirrors too.
Or point me to a website. I am always afraid of removing something that depends on how you bend and pull things.

www.bmwe34.net has instructions on how to remove the door panels.

Farrell,

Aww you mean I bought these extra mirror's for nothing? I got them cause the motor in the drivers side is waaayyy louder than the passengers side so i figured it might go one day.

Hi Wyl
The mirrors all vary in how much mechanical noise they make.
They all become much much less noisy once you have added some vaseline to the motor drive pinion gear.

That's what ive done with mine & they are almost silent..

Im afraid they dont fail & I guess that your original mirror could have been treated using the aboe technique.

Sorry.

Farrell
