Toyo R-888. Anyone tried on a heavy car?

As someone made a massive offer for my set of 235/45 17 Corsa's I need something else to use on track. The GF's 325i uses these on track as prescribed by regulations, and they're very durable but lots of fun on that car. I'm wondering if they'd be any good on the e34. They're made in all standard e34 M5 sizes, and road legal........ Has anyone used them?

Oh, price is between half and 2/3 of a PZero Corsa......

I have tried some TR-1's ??? and they were pretty good in the wet and very quiet, but not sure about the 888's. Look good for the summer but would want to read more about their design etc if I was spending $$$$.

T1R is a normal street tire. R888 is not! As stated in my original post I will be using on track and Nordschleife only, with a set of Rosso's close at hand if rain starts falling.......

http://www.toyojapan.com/new_tires/p...888/index.html

Seems their list of sizes has grown since then...

Haven't heard of that tyre before. Pattern looks nice!

My overall experience with the brand should be known by now:

In the standard sizes (FI 205-50-15) the Toyo's suffer from a soft wall

They don 't feel like the tyre one would fit to cars above 1200 kilos.

Apart from that, I feel that the S and newer R compound is very good on the Ascona. I 've used up several sets of S's and am working my way down on a set of 17" R's when not on my usual 16s which are still on R's. ( 215/40)

I have confidence in this brand, but this 888 must be a hell of a different tyre than the Proxes T1 counterparts..Which it probably is. Is this league of tyres (market segment) the one where Mich SportCups are in and those radicals Finn had on the car during the Alps?

I'd defo try those on the rear of my car in 265/35/18 (as the Conti's are slowly starting to get worn ) if the price is right!

Steve, I think there's only one way to find out and I think you should do the honours!!

What is this "S" & "R" compound? im assuming both are streetlegal racetyres? (R-tyres).
What are you using the Ascona for? are you in a race-series?

Mine are Dunlop D01J's.. the Sport Cup's are harder (more of a street-track compromise), but ofcourse way better than any regular streettyre

S and R are the same tire ( Proxes T-1 ) , in which the R is the follow-up on the S. Not much difference, except for sidewall strenght , though it all depends on the sidewall-size I've experienced. I ran a set of 215/40 on a 16in 9J rim which worked out fine, but 205/50 on a 7.5 rim does not feel great.Car starts to roll over the sides of the tyre a lot.

The Toyo Proxes T1-S first got popular in Holland around 1996, and I 've used them a lot on the car, which is used for sprints and trackdays mainly. Most trackdays prohibit the use of slicks and the fact that I drive my car to the event most of the time makes sure that I fit the regular street tires.

I feel they can be compared with Pirelli's on small cars, though I neither had the pleasure of the Corsa's nor the Nero's in use on a track ( not sure they even come in 16")

The heaviest cars I've seen these on at UK trackdays have been Imprezas and Mitsu Evos. I believe they grip very well, but are noisy and are not recommended for wet conditions.

They are road-legal track tyres here (like the Corsa, Pilot Sport Cup et al) rather than race tyres, and some people use them for driving to the track as well.

Unfortunately they cars I've see using them are probably 400kg lighter than an M5, so can't say how they will stand up to the extra weight - although the Toyo site does list suitable correct load indices for our cars.

I'd give them a go and monitor them regularly to see how they're standing up.

Ive Got Toyo T1S 245/40/18 on my Nissan.
Once I got the Geometry right on the car, these tyres have excellent dry weather grip.
The car weighs 1520 kgs so is nearly 150-200 kgs lighter than E34 M5

Its also active 4 wheel steer & active 4wheel drive so it can really make the most of each tyres grip.

Dont know about wet weather grip yet though.

Hmmmm, I feel open wallet surgery coming up....

As stated these R888 are fitted to the GF's track-325i, and handle the abuse remarkably well. It takes a while to get some temperature in them, but they don't overheat very quickly and wear quite nicely. Let's see if there's a deal to be had....

Might be worth a try, since street tires have no life whatsoever when used under these cars in anger.

They are a trackday tyre. There some other makes also that do simular tyres. Avon's tyre seem to be good. But I think it will be abit of trail and error to find out how well the last. Could be worth a look into the Corsa's or even the Cups fitted to the CSL.
