12 cyl. Exhaust

I read somewhere last night that some of the early North American imports of the E34 M5, in addition to dual climate control, had the 12 cyl. exaust.

Is this correct and, if so, what do they look like in comparison to the (I guess) standard exhuast that later imports came with.

Thanks in advance. Be kind, I'm new to this ....

12cyl exhaust on a 6cyl??

I dont think so Tim..

I think all 3.6's worldwide had the same exhaust, apart from the cats..

As the manifolds on the V12 would be four individual manifolds (three pots each), then I suppose the M5 could have had two of the manifolds off the V12 (the ones from the right hand bank), if that's what you mean...

But who cares?

Just trying to figure out what I have because I do have one of the early NA cars that came with the auto climate control and am trying to figure out if my exhaust, whether it be a different tip or what have you, is different. Enquiry minds want to know.

I see. If you PM me the last 7 digits of your VIN number, I may be able to tell you whether your factory exhaust MF is the same as fitted to other M5s or not through ETK.

The Exhaust manifolds obviously are bespoke tuned headers for the S36 engine.
However, the underfloor intermediate pipes to rear muffler do originate from the 750i V12.
They needed an exhaust with very high flow capabilities.
The part wont fit like for like from one model to another due to exhaust hanger location but generically, they are the same.

Hi.

I mesaured the diameter the income of the rear mufler pipes. Agree with the orig M5 mufler diameret. (The 540i rear mufler income pipes are smaller).
I putted up the 750i rear mufler. Fit perfect......i think the id number in a ETK different only because the out pipes shape from the mufler is different. The 750i have not ruond shape
Anyhow the 750i rear mufler working well on my S38b38.

A lot of the early road test articles mention the 750i silencer and associated hardware as being used on the M5. I suppose BMW saved a little on tooling costs by having one major pressing shared across 2 platforms. Whether the internal parts are the same on both applications I don't know but as 6 & 12 cylinder engines are acoustically similar it is possible I suppose.
