It's basically the whole thing inside/build in the metal round cilinder, you can see some sort of fragile device in there behind the mesh. Connects above with the slide-on connector. Regarded as MAF often in US speak

thanks, yes mine is knackered. As AndyE and me discovered, the protective screen (part #9 in pic above) appeared damaged and torn at the top, and I am getting a new one tomorrow along with the air flow meter (and o2 sensor). I was unclear on what was what, and whether this was indeed the MAF, as well as it being the item that my garage are replacing.
what could have possibly caused this damage? it looks like something has 'bown' thru piercing/tearing the screen

Very common failure this.
Ray W did an article for the E34M5.com/faqs on replacing the protective mesh screens either side of the MAF.

I made full use of the article back then..

Amazing when you look back at some of the articles being written by current members a few yrs ago.

Even then, Ray W & Gary Derian knew so much when I knew nothing..

Cheers Guys.

How does it happen tho farrell? Is it just wear & tear over time? or a blow-back etc?

And also could this failure of the screen cause the damage to my MAF, and therefore my subsequent engine problems??

I tried digging thru the e34 faq's but its hard when you're not sure exactly what you are looking for with no search facility!

Cheers again, as always!!

So its all one unit:

also on this site: http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/Recipe.htm

it states upgrading the MAF as it is quite restrictive???? I don't understand, is the picture a non-OEM part? Or are they talking about upgrading the lesser e34 models??? (it mentions the m30 engine...)

I may be waaay off on this, but that doesn 't look like it at all!

I've had mine of so many times in the last weeks, only thing I can imagine is that plastic part being able to be detached from the metal housing. Would surprise me if it came out looking like that though.

My mesh was damaged as well, but I've simply left it out. Use it to drain the potatoes now

Restrictive

I think restictive is in reference to the VANE air flow on the m30 and m20. It is that metal flap contraption.

Everytime you hit the gas the flap flies open and then falls back to guage the air flow. Where as the one in the picture, I believe, uses a heated wire to measure the airflow. (The cooling of the heated wire + math= airflow)lol

MAF's square plug (!!)

Hi folks! I searched the forum yesterday and found the thread about VW's MAF sensor alternative to our pricey item. I was intrigued by the part pictures, since my MAF (E34 M5 Touring) has a ROUND, SCREW-IN, 6-pin connector, instead of the square one shown in the diagram above (which is just like what VWs use, hence the direct use of VW's part). Does anyone have a clue about that? I need to replace the MAF asap - should I have the loom adapted to the square connector? TIA
