Need help with repair priority

Hi guys, here's the full list from my PPI. Was wondering if you guys could help me with the order in which I should get these repairs done. As in, most serious ones first. The mechanic said the car was actually in good overall shape

RR SLS, leaking
Self leveling adjust rod rusted and left loose
L&R Rear pitman arm joints worn
Front center link worn
Upper control arm bushings weak
Valve cover gasket leaking- (odd one as the PO had this done a couple months ago)
Oil return tube O-rings leaking
Timing chain tensioner leaking - recommend M3 update
Rad hoses too soft
Intake air boot torn (this is patched for now)

non-mechanical-

LR window motor faulty
Driver's headrest cable requires repair
RF door lock actuator faulty
RF fog lamp cracked

I was quoted $3500 to fix everything. Seems not too bad.

Thanks guys,

Nix

It's all critical, just bite the bullet, I had to for a similar total.

2) If you need a SLS rod, I've recently junked mine. My overal impression of both the valve and the rod are that they are crap. More rust on there than any other chassis part. It's fixed very easily to the ARB though, just a U bent threaded piece & clamp. Picture can be seen below.

1) SLS system is nice to keep, mostly for it being only one leaky shock . It's not neccesairy to replace both of them, for they have their pressure source externally unlike regular shocks. If you decide to junk SLS, have a look at my recent post on the subject :

What choice for SLS removal?

and:

SLS delete kit & Koni deal

I can recommend the Koni setup

3) Pitman arms are not to difficult a job, and not that costly. Huge steering improvement, and alignment is probably impossible with those worn.

5) replace with upgrade ( fi Powerflex) bushes while you're at it, numerous threads on this subject, lots of members can vouch for that upgrade.

6) Valve cover gasket pretty straightforward too as you know. Might have you doubting the PO's words though, but its also very possible your mechanic THINKS it's leaking because it was never cleaned after the PO changed it. Clean it first and then see if leakage returns.

8) Timing chain tensioner was bound to be replaced anyway, numerous threads and DIY instructions available under search function.

9) About the water hoses, does the mechanic mean the flow within them is bad or just that the material has gone bad?

about the non mechanical stuff, you have other threads running on those apart from headrest cable.

Good luck , it isn 't all that bad. Welcome to the world of E34 M5 maintenance & upgrade!

Wout

I would change the coolant hoses first.. they arent expencive at all, and you can easily do this yourself.. the potential risk of blowing the engine is just too high, should one of the hoses fail, and you not notice it in time..
Raymond posted a list of the partnumbers, and the procedure for the job, in the faq..

In '03 i was in Budapest to watch the F1 GP, when we fueled up to head home, i noticed a pool of coolant under my car.. turned out one of the top hoses that had failed.. was'nt too easy to find spareparts a Sunday around midnight.. but we managed to locate a universal hose, that could be used..
For the 1600km drive home, i limited myself to 200kph just to be on the safe side

Agreed
Coolng hoses first.
Then the tensioner oil leak.
Then move to suspension parts followed by KDS alignment.
Window & the like are the last on the list.

BTW Wout..
A very well thought out post.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning the valve cover gasket. I have no reason to doubt the PO as he's an honest guy and I've seen the receipts. Pardon my silly question but could somebody point me in the general direction of the valve cover gasket so that I might clean it?

My mean concern and reason for considering the SLS delete is that suppose I spend the 1000+ the fix the one leaking corner, what's to say another corner won't start leaking the next week??

Thanks,

nix

Part 18 and 19. And tighten the cover down from the center out in a star like you would tighten a wheel.
