Engine noise

On start up tonight, I noticed a deep rattling noise coming from the front of the engine. It chatters and alters in frequency as the revs change. It sounds a bit like water pump bearings. Has anyone experinaced this or have any ideas? Any thoughts appreciated.

I have actually had the main pulley come off... LOL

Pretty interesting apparently you are supposed to put those bolts on with Blue Locktight...

Hi!
To be clear, check the timing chain TENSIONER, TENSIONER, TENSIONER!!!!!!!
Don`t start/drive the car!!!!
How have you parked the car or have you done maintenance/other things with the car while it was stationary? If the engine was noiseless when you stopped teh car last time, and now make a rattling noise chances are high that it is the tensioner.
On a swedish forum a guy destroyed his engine just last week like this. He changed all the belts and rotated the engine in wrong direction to get the belts on. Then he let the car run for ten mins to hear if the noise went away....
I had an episode exactly a year ago when I changed tyres, the car was parked in gear and with handbrake. but obviously there was some strain in wrong direction for the tensioner and it stuck..... result-no damage as I didn`t run the car and just towed the car to a garage. Ended up overhauling the engine for 6000euros in the same session as I got the timing chain and pulleys replaced(involves removing the top, if it is done by the book....)

Mmm, interesting, i have done the screwdriver test on the waterpump and the bearings are dead noisy and the noise from the screwdriver is consistant with the external noise. I have ordered a water pump at £150, should be here monday. Ill run the engine with the pump belt removed before final removal but I have done no maintainence since last time I moved the car and I did think it sounded different from inside the car last time I drove it, hence the investigation. Thanks for the pointer though. Has anyone done a pump on this engine, any hints or tips???

At least 10 of us have been down this road before. BUY A NEW TENSIONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The waterpump is a non-issue, easy to replace, and not terminal al long as you keep an eye on the guage. The tensioner is terminal and will not rattle long. Every second that chain rattles it's beating up the guides, which aren't overly strong anyway.

Partnumber 11311405081 for the vastly better S50B32 tensioner.

I had both waterpump and tensioner replaced, but the waterpump was replaced mainly because of preventive measures. It did make some noise that alarmed my mechanic, and since it's not a massive cost and we were down there for the tensioner's sake I decided to do it all together.

Waterpumps are one of those things that go without warning, and the one I took off mine was pretty bad,BUT still making little noise. It is a return part for the BMW dealer though!! ( at least, that's what THEY wanted )

However I think the sound you describe above isn 't made by the pump since mine was bad and barely noisy.

1) Get the tensioner replaced, in practice it's even easier than the excellent DIY guide provided multiple times on this board.

2)Do the waterpump as well, € 200 is a 'peace of mind' bargain in the S38 world. Its failure will come without warning in the future
