Alternative parts suppliers for engine rebuilds

Hi there

Bearing in mind that the E34 m5 ceased production in 95 and most of the cars accumulate considerable mileage by now, Engine rebuilds and repairs will become necesary for a number of cars from either component failure of general wear & tear.

So I have decided to ask you guys for posible alternatives to OEM bmw parts, I am about to begin rebuilding my engine, I have suffered a loss of power and nº 5 plug keeps oiling up, suspect piston related failure of some kind, when I remove the head I will find out.

Never the less, I decided to contact my local BMW dealer to enquire about the cost of a set of replacement pistons and was qouted 2500 € + VAT, seriusly overpriced in my opinion, so can anyone advise on the cost of replacement pistons from an alternative supplier.

I also would like to get my head gasflowed, cant find anyone in spain to do it, so I am consider having done by someone in the uk, can anyone recomend a suitable co in the uk who will do a proper job at a reasonable cost.

I intend to replace all gaskets and seals whilst to prevent any problems with oil leaks, any other sugested mod or repairs that should be carried out when rebuilding the engine. I am also considering removing the dual mass flywheel and replacing with either a 3.6 item or a lightweight unit ( does anyone manufacturer a lightweight flywheel ? )

Perhaps we should put together a list of the ideal or desirable modifications when you carry out an engine build, such as replacing the cam chain tensioner with the M3 unit, as I am afraid due to the age of our vehicles it will become a more comon occurence.

Regards
