Mystery part competition

Every time you buy a BMW which is more than a few years old, there is always something missing (spare key, glovebox torch, tools etc). However, I've discovered an extra bit lying in the glovebox of my E34 which I can't place...

It's a black plastic cover measuring 224x64mm - approx 9"x2.5" in old money - and it looks like it might be a blanking plate for the radio. But I don't think it is!

The back of it has a part number which isn't registering when I search the online ETK. It has a BMW roundel and the letters "SE" above a part number of 51/16 1 969 106. This doesn't look like the normal character set for BM parts but there are no other numbers apparent. The letters "AUS", "ECE", and "GB" are stamped elsewhere on the back.

Any ideas?

Give us a pic! BTW 51 16 1 969 106 is a genuine BMW part number, just old!

I haven't got a genuine ETK here to tap it into, but the number sequence is correct.

Sorry for the delay...

I didn't mention that there are 4 small holes in this plastic cover, as you can see in the photo. It's not clear if these are original or if someone has added them later.

It may well be the cover that goes next to the handbrake for an 'old style' fixed cell phone handset. The cover sat beneath the handset / dialler and covered the long narrow storage compartment next to the passengers seat! That's my best guess.

I think you are correct. I remember that exact part from my 1991. I believe the four holes are for the mounting screws for the phone.

I did wonder about this due to the shape of the cover (and the cell antenna on the roof). However, the plastic piece doesn't exactly fit the aperture in the centre console and there's no obvious method to fix it. Perhaps there was there another part which fitted in the compartment which this part was fixed to??

The handset and additional equipment came with a variety of brackets / clips etc and when fitted correctly mounted on that part perfectly.
