hello fellow WBS Owners,
My name is Wout and I'm from The Netherlands. Owner of a nearly mint '91 M5, Sebring Grey with full leather interior ( 3rd version incl dash). Schnitzer suspension,18" classic schnitzer PZero'd.
I'm happy to have found other enthusiast as myself, wo like to talk about their M5 all day.
First question I have, does anyone know for sure about valve clearances and settings on a S38 B36 because mine recently started ticking. No power loss but a little disturbing for me. It reaches peak volume around 3/4 rpm. Mileage in KM is 190.000.
Thanks a lot and I hope for a pleasant contact with all of you
best regards,,
Wout
btw is there any way of showing pictures of my car??

Welcome Wouter
Valve shimming to be done with completely cold engine.(Leave over night to be sure)
Cant remember optimum clearance for intake / exhaust as manual is at work.
Clearances might be on the E34M5 faq though.
Shims are available from BMW & if necessary, you can grind down the differing sized shims to get optimum clearances.
Use of a feeler guage is compulsory.
Its quite time consuming. I tend to do mine only in the summer.
If its Winter time when they need doing, I get a local specialist to do it.
I would recommend doing this job every 20,000-30,000 kms
Some of the other Guys might have the detail info.

Valce clearance specification (Vclr): 0,28(mm) < Vclr < 0,32 (mm). The average is 0,30mm. Valve shims are available in 0,05mm increments, as are feeler gauges. 0,30mm is the practical value to use.
As Farrel attested: Measure the valve clearance only on a cold engine with the cam lobes pointing upwards. Measure all 24valves first. Then determine whether or not you can interchange shims.
This article describes the procedure for an S14, which is the same as the M88/S38, albeit missing two cylinders.
Actually I work as a salesman at a used car showroom ( only 15 BMW's on 300 stock) and have worked before as a junior mechanic.
@ goneagain, nice to see someone owning a similar colored car, to tell you the truth and not trying to step on anyone;s toes, I'd seen too many silver/technoviolet cars and silver/avusblue and the fact that I loved that grey Shelby GT500 in "Gone in 60 seconds' so that was the reason to specificly look for a grey car. To me, the grey "company dull car"color is a perfect match for the low-profile 4 door sportscar we all embrace ( yes I know, you'll say; "low profile? what about 18s Schnitzer's? ). Will defenitely tell you whenever I visit the fine town of brussels ( you'll also be able to tell when you hear tire screaming engine humming M5 noise and a copy of your car sideways trough the streets ( ps are you familiar with problemcar.nl??)
@ Farrell
I understand that you have earned your stripes at this forum. thanks for reply, will check on those clearances, strange thing is that it got wors in 2 secondds, but any mechanic that listens to it says absolutely valve ticking rather than something worse
Hope to stay in touch, btw don;t seem to be able to see pictures of your cars???

One addition, don't turn the engine while a shim is out, you will damage the cams.
Second addition, turn the engine by hand in the correct direction only, turning it backwards will release the chain tensioner. I know it sounds basic, but I"ve seen it happen too many times.
BTW, you need a special tool to press the valvespring-retainers, you can order it from the dealer. If you borrow one, inspect it carefuly, as te small-end-ridge crumbles after sloppy use, and you don't want the bits falling in.....

Seems obvious, but thanks for the addition

Yep, that reminds me to call my dealer. I asked a quotation for that tool, but need to call them first
