Inspection II - William Jacks' BMW, Sunningdale.

Hi There,

Going in for an Inpsection II on Tuesday 22nd November.

Car is going to the same Dealership that Brian (yewcorner) is currently having his Inspection I done at - and his new Flywheel - read his recent thread.

I haven't used these guys before, and based on my first conversation with the Service Chappie who was recommended to me by Brian, seems like they're happy to keep these old timers in the Main Dealer network by chipping-in a little, and giving some decent levels of discount. - - The Service Guys at my local dealer (Scotthall's in Watford) just stared at me blankly when I mentioned the 'd' word last time around .........!!

- - last month I was quoted the best part of £880.00 by them - but they really gave me the impression that they just don't care,(I came away actually with the feeling I was inconvieniencing them by the very prospect of bringing my 10-year-old ///M banger to their service depot), and I do wonder whether they have anybody there who really understands the complexities of these old cars without spending hours looking at the computer.

Am saving best part of £200.00 on that price by going to William Jacks', (bear in mind I getting a rebate by using my own oil - Castrol RS 0w-40, that eqautes to a nearly £100.00 saving on it's own.).

Will report back on any further nasties they find during the service (there's bound to be something) - I have asked them to look at the diff, which appears to have a fresh film of oil over it and may be leaking, and also the foglamp washers, which were supposedly 'repaired' under warranty last summer by Scotthalls, funny that, but they still don't work properly......

Re: Inspection II - William Jacks' BMW, Sunningdale.

Hi TK

I think I may have given you the costs for my 'Inspection 11' at William Jacks.

I also used my own oil for engine/gearbox/diff but had a KDS check and some work to toe in the front wheels. They do check the valves. The cost came to £756.58. So without the KDS it would have been £609.70 inc VAT. I also had the use of a courtesy car for the two days.

In comparison, my local independant 'Munich Motors' of Wokingham who rebuilt the engine for me and I can highly recommend them, would have charged me £300.00 ex VAT without the valve check (This is another £250 + VAT). They will only use their own oil which is Halvoline 10w40 and not allow you to use your own choice. Can not check the EDC, do not wash/vacuum your car and do not supply a courtesy car. The two day service generally turns into 4 days as they have an extended supply line to BMW in terms of ordering the parts in.

So without adding in the niceties as mentioned above, the 'bog standard' service with valve check comes in at £646.25, loss of use of car for however long, walk to and from the station on drop off and collection etc. etc. Oh! and I nearly forgot, not discount on parts, full retail pricing, (I generally get upwards of 20% to 35% dependant on part).

So, although you look at the £45 an hour to the £100 an hour, I generally find William Jacks (James Stock) are generally more than 2.5 times efficient and this is borne out in my costs/convenience situations.

One vote for the 'Stealers'! Unheard of I know?

Just my perspective.

Cheers

Re: Inspection II - William Jacks' BMW, Sunningdale.

hi there,

i have just booked my 1990 3.6 M5 in for a inspection II at sytners
in leicester, and they quoted me £763.00 for it. this was with a discount for being in the 6+ range that they do. must admit i nearly had a heart attack at that news, as i only just bought the car a couple of weeks ago and i wanted it to start off having a full service, and it seems an awfull lot of money for 6 hours work. interestingly they quoted me only £100 pounds less for an inspection I. does that sound right ??

does anyone know of a good indipendant specialist in the leicestershire area, as
i cant realy afford to pay that sort of money on a regular basis.

Re: Inspection II - William Jacks' BMW, Sunningdale.

Hi There,

Inspection II update - the car's still there since I dropped it in when I posted this thread.

Apparently upon re-assembly of the various other jobs, the technician noted that both rear calipers were not up to a brake fluid change - one had a sheared-off brake bleed nipple - the other bleed nipple was apparently 'non-functioning'.

The car's passed it's M.O.T. whilst there, so I assume the stoppers are O.K. - and my car has had new Disks and pads all round very recently.

Anyway, two new calipers are on order (None available in U.K., but apparently freely available from BMW in Germany), so it's another five days or so before these can be fitted.

..all being done under warranty, I'm told, so makes the process hopefully a bit less painful.

Will post the full invoice for works done via a .pdf scan, once I've got the car back.

Re: Inspection II - William Jacks' BMW, Sunningdale.

Hi There,

Go the car back yesterday - yes it took a month, but I told the service guys to hang onto the car and go over it with a fine-tooth comb- even fixing some of the less relevant, but annoying bits that I've lived with over the past two years of ownership.

This was what I paid for
  • Inspection II
  • Replacement of some suspension bushes - (Thrust struts ?)
  • Removal of Front Bumper, replacement of all headlamp and foglamp washer tubing, and some of the washer jets into the foglamps
  • Consumables - Wiper Blades, e.t.c
  • All Oils changed (using my own Engine Oil - Castrol RS) - Diff / Gearbox / Clutch Fluid & Brak Fluid
  • All Belts Changed
This was what was done under BMW Warranty :-
  • Gearbox Oil Seal
  • Propshaft into Diff Oil Seal
  • Replaced both rear calipers (Working fine but Bleed Nipples siezed !)
I was expecting to pay well into the £1k territory for the above lot, but in the event, the job was done for a very reasonable price - has restored my faith in main dealers - but it's very much not what you know, but who you know - and it's a big thank you to Brian (yewcorner) for the Service Advisor and Parts Dept. contacts that helped me out a lot.

- - The guy that worked on my car is apparently a real enthusiast on the older ///Ms - and takes a real pride in worknig on them - rather than getting the usual spotty 17-year-old trainee and paying £100.00+ per hour + V.A.T.

..It's ready for the Track-Day on 14th January now, and I had some great sideways action on the way home yesterday - big smiles all round !!
