Quick question re aircon refrigerant....

Hi folks,
Does anyone know what type of refrigerant my car would use, I am presuming it will be R134 which is the later type due to R12 being illegal to use over here now. The car was registered in August 1991.

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

R134 it is.

No question of that.

Re: Quick question re aircon refrigerant....

Are you sure it will be R134 as opposed to R12??
My Uncle has a 91 525i and it uses R12 - mine is a 93 and it uses R134 so id check the label on the front panel if i were you.
It seems alot of manufacturers changed form 12 to 134 around 92-93 from what ive seen/owned.
Alot of AC places wont vac out old R12 as it will contaminate their machines so phone to check first.

Pete.

Re: Quick question re aircon refrigerant....

If it is R12 valves, you can buy adaptors from ebay for £2.95 each to enable using r134 gas. My car is a 92 R12 one and the a/c works (after a year unused) with r134, no problems or leaks.

Phil.

Thanks Phil, I had a chat with a friend who amongst other things does airconditioning at his garage, he says a similar thing to what you have posted. R134 will go into an R12 system, with the aid of an adaptor, but you can only fill it to approximately 80% of it's maximum capacity - not really a problem.
