6 speed gearbox

Hello , new to the site and probably have far too many questions. I have owned a 92 m5 for 4 years but have lived in the U.S. while the car has been in the U.K.
3 years ago I had the engine rebuilt, new ECU, clutch, flywheel, and brakes.
I came back 6 months ago and and pulled it out of the back of the shed, where chickens had made their home, to find it only needed a jump start.
On further inspection the lack of use had taken its toll. Mainly the suspension that started leaking as soon as it was driven again (yup, that old chestnut).
Luckily having a friend at the local BMW dealer made replacing all 4 corners a little less painfull. After a full service and a few other things I can say that all is running well . The engine is a little tight due to not being ran in yet but I will be patient!
I have always tried to keep the car standard(ish) but I recently purchased a unroadworthy 95 for spares which throws a spanner in the works. I was going to sell most parts off the car but the 6spd box and brakes seem appealing. I would assume that these parts are interchangeable but have no experience of the results.
Also, is anything else usefull off the car? I know tearing apart a 95 M5 seems harsh but it really has nothing to offer the world other than an organ doner. I am currently looking for a good clean one and know how rare they are .
Any comments will be helpfull.
Richard.

Box will fit. If you don't mind a very short final drive you I'm sure Cyrus will pay an arm and a leg for the 3,23 diff. If you want some comfort, you should swap the diff as well.

The brake conversion has been done by a number of members, so shouldn't be a problem.

Happy spannering,

Steve

Re: 6 speed gearbox

As there were only 140 odd 95 6 speeds ever made in rhd, it might be useful if you post the vin of the car you are wrecking so that it can be noted as 'no longer active' by those who record such things.

Also, the floating 'big' brakes off the 95 bolt straight onto earlier model M5's (and, indeed, any E34). Have a look at the following:

http://www.bmwe34m5.com/faqs/?theme=...nt_id_select=3

Cheers and good luck.

Oh, and if you don't want the brakes, I will pay you handsomely for them!! PM me if interested.

Cheers

Re: 6 speed gearbox

Thanks to you both, very helpfull. I think the brake conversion is a must so I will keep them (sorry).
I have never driven a 6spd properly so not sure how much different it is. Now I know they are interchangeable I suppose the question is should I do it?
I will post the vin also . Didnt realise there were so few RHD 6spd, I suppose the task of finding one isnt that easy.
Thanks again for the info...

5 or 6 ? Hmmmm!

Re: 6 speed gearbox

6 speed box with 3.91 LSD can be annoying. It takes way the relaxed nature of the car.

However, as I have found out today - gives mind boggling acceleration if you can be bothered to change so many gears in a short space of time.

Re: 6 speed gearbox

Hello Cyrus, I have had a better look at the forum and see what you are doing with your car. It does seem that the gears would be too short for everyday driving.
I dont use it everyday and would appreciate a little bit more "kick" but dont want to mess with the M5 philosophy of power and usabilty.
Maybe I will fit the box but keep the diff just in case it is a little gnarly.
I read the thread about the 7 series diff. That sounds appealing, I will look in to that some more
How is your car doing?

Its actually very very driveable because the the gears are more verstile now. I can make a mistake of not changing down when I should and get away with it.

Its just when your drivnig hard you have to change more often. The good thing is that gears are so tightly packed together that your always in the power band.

Re: 6 speed gearbox

Mine seems to lag since the new engine but I dont think it has anything to do with the rebuild. It is wavy through the rev range and I think that is causing my power frustrations. You wouldnt think "power frusrations & M5" would be in the same conversation but I can tell something isnt right.
I will go ahead and fit the 6spd but I think other issues should be resolved first.
Did you change the box yourself?

Re: 6 speed gearbox

I've got the 6sp box and am using the 3.91 diff that was there for the 5sp. You'll need the prop shaft as well as the 6sp box is a bit longer.

I like the 3.91 diff with 6sp box - but have not driven one with a 3.23 diff so don't know - but that results in exactly the same gearing in 1-5 as with the 5sp box, with 6th as an "overdrive" for lower rpm cruising. As I never bought the M5 for its fuel economy, I opted to leave the diff and try it, as then 6th is the same as 5th in the 5sp, but with shorter lower gears. I thought first would be unusable, but it is not, and it means from zero you can leap up in to the power band and stay there. Because I have a 3.6 as well, that's where they are at their best, and that engines screams beautifully!

You can search my posts as there have been few threads on this, and also check out Rob L's site, as he did it and compared the 3.23 with diff's from the 7 series and the 8 series. The 8 series 3.64 diff was what I was considering going with.
