Ugly 3.8 Steering wheels - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

Why oh why did BMW put that ugly airbag truck like sized steering wheel into an M5? I just dont understand it. Its massive and its hideous. Everyone thats seen my 3.8 says its such a nice car. Every single person has commented on how horrible the steering wheel is.

Even a 525i had the option of a much nicer airbag sport steering wheel

Are the two interchangeable?

I dont care if I fit a steering wheel from a lesser car, its much nicer!

The pic is the M Tec airbag model. It was an option on E34 M5s in the later years. My car came from the factory with that wheel.

I agree. Since the steering wheel is the one part of the car that you touch 100% of the time when driving, it ought to reflect the car better than the stock wheel does. I have the same wheel that's on my 530iT which is disappointing.

If it was an option on the m5 then Im just going to have to buy one.

Is it alot smaller aswell?

Let me know what they cost as i have been looking to replace mine for a while now.

I know you are looking at breakers for a wheel, but according to ETK CD the wheel is described as Sports Steering Wheel Airbag 2, and is listed at 385mm - that must be diameter.

The wheel has part number 32 34 1 162 097

There may be a few more little parts needed with it........

I have one on my 1995 6 speed. The wheel is still not as nice as the non-airbag 3 spoke design I had on my 1992 3.8.......

I am beginning to think you are not pleased with your 3.8. Just send it over to me and I'll send you my head ache. We have lovely airbags here, thank you Uncle Sam for protecting me from myself.
