Productive couple of days...

Been busy on the M5 over the last couple of days:-

Sunday moring i decided to try to rectify the lumpy running so off came the fan and i cleaned the crank sensor with the aid of a paintbrush and some white spirit - you could eat your dinner off it now!
Also i decided i wanted to check the balance of the throttle bodies as sometimes it felt like the lumpy running was imbalance between the cylinders - almost like it was dropping onto 4 - got the intake plenum off without too much hassle and after giving all the throttle's a good clean up i got the verniers out - i found that no.1&2 throttles were slightly advanced over 3&4 and 5&6 so i balanced these up.
Whilst the intake plenum was off i gave that a good scrub up too.....
Job no.2 was giving the front end a bit of a freshen up - the metal trim that runs along the bottom of the grille was heavilly pitted, stonechipped and in a few areas where the chips were down to the metal rust was evident - all this came off and gave me the opertunity to replace the offside main beam unit as mine was holed - id already found a good seconhand unit so killed two birds with one stone - headlamp is fitted and ive rubbed down, primed and painted the lower trim strip - just a final night in the garage to let the paint go off and itll be back together tomorrow.
Job no.3 was non functioning washer jets - had the same problem on my old E30 325i so removed the washer bottle to get access to the pipework - blew it all through with a high pressure bike pump and repeated the same of the actual washer jets themselves - jobs a good un
Just got to investigate the nearside front suspension clonk now.......

Pete.

Oh Joy - another day underneath the car rolling around on the garage floor then
Whats the prefered option for bushes then - im guessing the M5 likes to eat them for Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner....
Is aftermarket the best bet for longevity or stick with BMW parts???

I think mine needs the throttle body clean up too. How did you go about adjusting the butterflies and how long did it take. Mine has once nearly stalled from cold and i wondered if this was the cause.

Re: Productive couple of days...

Sounds like it could be the ISV valve sticking which is handilly located underneath the intake plenum - you can remove it and clean it with carb cleaner then make sure you relubricate it afterwards with a light oil....
Whilst your removing the plenum which i think youll have to do then its worthwhile cleaning out the crap on the throttle butterflys - i spent about 1/2 a day removing bits and cleaning them and then balancing the throttles - you need some for of measuring device here to make sure all is equal - i used Vernier calipers - the balancing part didnt take long as i only had to adjust one set of bodies but if you had to do two sets ten obviously it will take longer.
I reckon anyone competent could do it in half a day.

Pete.

I can have a go or i can help you do it?
You dont have to be a rocket scientist to do it - just need a logical approach and a set of verniers or a dial gauge - something to reference the butterflys against.
Anyone with a bit of mechanical knowledge could do it.

Pete.

I would hope not as the struts were all new less than 40000 miles ago when the EDC legs were replaced with new non EDC legs and new Hartge suspension was fitted
