I'm trying to remove my fan clutch to replace it with a new one (preventative maintenance), but I cannot figure out a way to stop the pully from spinning along with it. Stopping the belt doesn't do it either. I tried a strap wrench -- but I couldn't get it tight enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I did this today with my new clutch. Maybe try a box wrench (I think 11mm) on the water pump pulley and see if that holds it. Remember it is reverse thread. Righty loosey
97.5% of the time, I put the shaved 32 mm wrench on the fan clutch nut. Then I put my sweater or jacket to the "right" of that wrench, to protect plastic parts. Then I whack the crap out of the 32mm wrench, CLOCKWISE as you're looking at it, with ANOTHER 32mm wrench. Note: Clockwise....REVERSE thread!
If that doesn't work, I go grab my fan clutch wrench, from the toolbox, to hold the nuts on the pulley. This happens one out of ~40 times......
Small nuts are 10mm., but since you're counterholding them, this dimension is not important. You can't spin the 32mm nut using the 10mm nut as a brace, unless you use more than 1.....
Thanks, guys. I broke down and ordered a water pump pulley holder from Amazon (same day delivery, $25) and it came off without a problem. The seal had completely failed and the ball bearings inside had locked up! Glad I took care of this!
