93 F/S with 14,500 miles on BAT

Ok, I hope I'm not breaking any rules....but I felt compelled to share the link below to a 93 (US) M5 being sold on BringaTrailer.com or BAT.

First, while I have purchased a car thru BAT...let me say I have no connection to this particular car. What caught my eye is not only does it have only 14,500 miles...but it had been recently sold to Carmax (!) where the current (2nd) owner purchased and has added about 500 miles. I suppose it's possible it was an estate sale where original owner's heirs weren't aware of it's value...but if not...wow!

The car itself appears to be a time capsule with minor issues. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for.

I hope we see the new owner on this board.

Just saw this as well, wish I had a shot at his car when it was Carmax. According to current owner, the original owner is a wealthy guy who had his chauffeur drive to carmax to sell it. What a great story! I think this will sell high given the low mileage. Maybe EAG will snatch it up!

Garage
Guy updated his story to say that it went to Carmax to get appraised and a salesman bought it from under Carmax.

Who brings a 14k mile E34 M5 to Carmax for an appraisal? WTF? I can see Hagerty or the like, but really?

Regardless, I'm watching with interest--this auction will be a good benchmark to check US-spec E34 M5s' market value in 2017 (and this one is pretty standard aside from mileage and condition).

Unfortunately, something that may taint the results of this auction is that the collector car market in general seems to be in the midst of a lull, particularly for the big gainers in the past few years, like air-cooled 911s and E30 M3s.

yes it will be interesting to see what it sells for.

A very nice presenting Euro 92 3.6 sold yesterday on BaT for 16k, Macao Blue with black half leather/m cloth interior, and about 240k km.

It's already over $20K with 6 days to go in the auction. At this rate, it may approach (or pass) the price for a MY 91' with 32,000 miles that sold on BAT last year for $32,500. For those of you not familiar with BAT...it has a big following...and a very active & vocal group of enthusiasts. BAT really is doing a tremendous amount of business.

i sold a mercedes 560 SEC there a couple months ago, and got more than i expected. I'd certainly use them as a seller, but not a place for a bargain.

I do think that euro 92 was a pretty fair price though.

I remember your 560 SEC....not surprised you did well. Yeah, bargains are not the norm on BAT..though they're out there. In my case, I bought an 03' 911 Carrera Targa on BAT...and paid a solid price...which I was comfortable with given spec, condition, etc.

I think BAT attracts a knowledgeable crowd...which can be seen by the comments on the 14,000 mile 93' M5 and the 92' Euro M5 that just sold. I have to say, if I was going to sell my M5 I'd likely put it on BAT.

You have to wonder why someone would purchase this, drive it an average of 600 miles a year, and sell it to CarMax. I also wonder about the CarMax deal as I thought they do not deal in older vehicles. Also, why is the second owner selling it on after clocking 500 miles? The whole story sounds odd. How does it work for a BAT bidder with respect to things like a pre purchase inspection or verifying an odometer reading?

The story has gotten even more strange. Rich guy has his chauffeur take car to Carmax where employee buys car for himself (never sees lot) who fairly quickly sells to the owner of the car who is now selling on BAT after driving 500 miles.

As far as BAT selling process, it's up to owner of the car to work out those details while auction is live. If asked, I'd be shocked if the current owner wouldn't be willing to make the car available for inspection before auction end.
