Whistle noise from timing chain cover

I have a whistling noise coming from my timing chain cover. I thought it was my air pump, but my mechanic found it coming from the timing chain cover. He said it didn't sound like the tensioner was going bad. He didn't know what it was. I've had the car since JAnuary and it's always made the noise. He said that if it has gotten worse since I've had it then it's not something that's about to fail. It does have a set of Dinan cam gears, but I doubt that thats the cause. Does anybody have any ideas? My mechanic, who I trust, said it might cost around $1800 or less. He wouldn't know untill he got in there. The car does have 105k on it.

Its a straight forward job to remove the front timing cover to see if anything obvious is amiss.
BTW, How does your mechanic know without removing parts what dollar value might be incurred... ? can he forcast how much I will win on the lottery.

Seriously though , if it does have Dinan cam gears, then it might be that the original Duplex chain was reused. It could just be the meshing frequency of the new gear sprocket to the more worn chain, or the holes in the camgears moving air at certain rpm causing an airborne whistle.

My bet is that there is nothing wrong but an inspection would not hurt.

There is also a 'vacuum' hose which passes through the collection of wires/tubes under that black cover to the front of the rocker cover. It goes to a valve somewhere near the air pump. Maybe that could be making the noise, especially if its a whistling noise?
